For everyone who read The Basic Eight:
Daniel = Flannery. Snicket = Natasha.
Or, for those of you that watched Fight Club:
Daniel = Jack/Narrator. Snicket = Tyler Durden.
What do you think? Of course the chances of The Huge Secret being pulled out at the end of the series is probably nil because this would be just too strange, but it'd be awesome if it were true. I can just imagine Lemony going "why is everyone calling me Daniel?!" or something like that. I actually started a fanfic snippet about this.
So what do you all think? Don't take this seriously, it ain't gonna happen, but how do you think it would affect the series?
(Thought of another sorta-parallel: Session 9, that horror flick where this guy kills people at night without knowing about it until the very end. Do it, Goooordon...)

Okay, think about the entire angle of Daniel Handler, the real life author of ASOUE, and Lemony Snicket, the fictional author of ASOUE. We, the viewers/readers (who aren't dumb and know that Handler writes the series), now have two different takes on the same person, two identities who inherently are the same person--imagine if that entire angle was taken to a whole new level in the series, and at the very end or something it turns out that there is only the one person and the other was a fabrication/hallucination/manifestation of whatever. There is no Lemony Snicket (or, alternately, no Daniel Handler) within the universe of the books.
What I'm planning on doing is actually reversing it and making the whole thing a little alternate-universey, i.e. Daniel doesn't exist, Olaf's innocent and Lemony's been the one going around and setting all the fires or something (except he doesn't know this. It's hard to explain, go watch Session 9, it's like the same thing except with murder). I thought it might be something fun to toy with.

Not really a fanfic idea, just a thought. Not a theory either.
Though I'd personally adore it if that happened. LEMONY IS THE TRUE OLAF. omgwtf.

Hahaa.... omgwtf 2 da max!!!!!1 I didn't get what you meant by Snicket=Natasha at first but yeah... I GET IT NOW! Interesting theory, although I hope it doesn't happen because a)it's already been used, and shocking and great as it was in TB8, I don't think it would make sense in ASOUE. I'd feel seriously jipped, man. b)there's too much going on around Snicket: it just doesn't make sense that he's a fabrication. In TB8, at least there were clues. Like, for example, when Natasha says, "we can't have it at my house" and then Flan says, "we can't have it at my house" and then Douglas goes, "you already said that." Or whatever it was... in ASOUE there's been no buildup of that kind. I mean... They've been represented as different people at meetings, and although DH has hinted (like in his interview at the end of TBB) that he and Snicket are one and the same, in the series, I don't think it's realistic. BUT... I'd love to read the fic. Fanfiction.net is down and I'm seriously deprived here... You set me on the track of glorious ASOUE slash... and now I'm ficless... MY LIFE IS A BARREN WASTELAND!! But yeah... swans is right ( )... it would be interesting as a "oh dear! Look! I'm just a fictional character and I must escape!" type thing (like Sophie's World). But I hope for as many mistaken identities as can be well written at the end of the series (like... Beatrice actually being Isadora Quagmire... ) Heh... something cool and unexpected, anyway... I know he'll make it make sense, though, which is what matters, even if it is something crazy-screwed-up.

I think that the idea is pretty far-fetched, even for Snicket, and like Swans said, it would have to be preety good to pull off!
