This is not a theory, maybe you can come up with your own theories after this.
I read Salinger's Nine Stories, and 'For Esme-With Love and Sualor'. In fact I didn't understand much,(I'm mexi-CAN I'm still learning English), but I want to point out that this Esme has a younger brother named CHARLES! Rings any bell? Many assume that Mr. B's name is Charles, because of the poet. So, maybe Snicket/Handler is taking into account Salinger's Esme and Charles. That would explain why in TUA Esme's last name can't be read.
What do you think?
*I don't know if this have been posted before.

Hmmm... that's interesting. I said something kind of like this in another thread, but I think it was just going off on a tangent and I don't remember what on earth I was talking about. Oh yeah... I was talking about Esmé, Beatrice and Mrs. Baudelaire (if she isn't Beatrice) being sisters... I forget where it came from. But good for you for spotting that. I completely missed it. I didn't really get the story, either. It doesn't follow a definite format it's just some stuff that happens... that's what bugged me about it... although maybe I'm just stupid and missing something crucial. Anyway, sounds interesting!

I think that your theory of Esme, Beatrice and Mrs. B being sisters came from the groups of 3 siblings in the series. You know, the Bauds, the Quags, the Snickets, the White Powder Faced ladies w/their deceased sibling. I wonder if the Sebalds have another brother or sister.

Yeah, that's exactly what lead up to it... oh, and wait! Swans was talking about Snicket comparing people to ghosts. He compared Violet, Esmé and Beatrice to ghosts, so I thought maybe they were sisters.... you know, family resemblances and all. Now if I could remember what on earth got us onto that topic maybe I could find the thread.. I'll search in a minute...
A third Sebald sibling? Perhaps one of the people with hair/beards or lack thereof?

I read "Nine Stories" too, and I can't beleive that I missed that connection. I always thought that Mr. Baudelaire was named Charles, and this theory could make sense.

If they are sisters then that might explain where Esme got the snowsuit with a B on it in TSS. Unless she stole it or something. I think it's possible that they could be sisters. The whole sibbling thing where they all have three children seems likely. Didn't the two powdered face women leaves Count Olaf's troupe? I haven't read it in a while. Maybe they left because they went throught the same thing as the Baudelaires or soemthing. Just a thought. I could be wrong.
