I was reading the introduction to a book of stories written by Poe, and found some interesting things:
Edgar Allen Poe's parents died of tuberclerosis. This links to the theory that Mr. Poe has/had tuberclerosis, causing his cough. Poe could have gotten his cough from his parents.
"...Poe was inconsolable and began to drink for the first time. On hearing of his debts, John Allen [Poe's foster father] withdrew him from the university and Poe returned to Richmond, where, to his horror, he found Mrs. Allan was wasting away from consumption; it must have seemed to him that every chance at happiness was being cruelly snatched away from him" This seems to describes the Baudelaire's life perfectly, and as Mr. Poe often took away chances of happiness from the Baudelaires, this seems like a bit of irony.
Also in the introduction was several facts about Charles Baudelaire: He was quite impressed by Poe's works, and seemed to be quite obsessed with Poe. Baudelaire learned English just to read Poe's works. And Charles also translated some of Poe's work into French.
These peices of information jumped out at me. Discuss.

You've summed it up in a nutshell: The first literary allusions of the series were to Charles Baudelaire and Edgar Allan Poe, and the gloomy atmosphere that surrounds their writings is pervasive in ASOUE.

Thanks, E. I wasn't just referring to TBB, but it seems that those two allusions are the first two that pop up in the series.
