Have you ever considered that VFD could stand for "Volunteers Following D"? D here means "anyone, likely a writer, with some connection to Snicket or VFD" It would be someone whom Snicket alludes to. Any theories?

Yeah, Lemony is Daniel in real life (no matter what he says!).
It'd be interesting if it WAS "Volunteers Following D," and D was the leader of the "good" branch of VFD when it split up. Then it could be that Olaf's branch was Volunteer Fire Department, and they set fires. Kinna like Fahrenheit 451.

Good theory, J. However, I'm not sure if the evidence we have, besides the general big-words-and-good-grammar association, really supports that well. Can you give some specific evidence to support your thesis, as my literature teacher would put it?
Daniel is certainly a possibility for "D", if my theory has any truth behind it. I wanted to suggest it because no one ever has. In the next book, we may have some support for my case, or for "Volunteers Fighting Deletoriousness". Time will tell.

Actually, in the VFD Social transcript in UA, "D" says that he's Snicket's representative. During book signings and visits, Handler insists that he's only Lemony's representative and not he himself.
