I was wondering...do you have to be a certain age before you can join VFD?

There seems to be no lower bound. Sunny is being thought of as a new volunteer just as much as her siblings, according to Quigley's telegram.

Still, I believe that you have to have certain observational skills (or inventing or researching etc) before you may join. Infants and toddlers (Sunny is an exception) most likely don't have these skills. But there is a bit of the UA that shows pictures of a small child, probably six-ish that is being observed.

I think Sunny was just accepted as a volunteer because there would be no one to take care of her while her siblings were with V.F.D. Otherwise, you would need to have observational or note-taking skills to get in.

I think before you officially join the VFD, you go through training, where you gain notetaking and researching skills. From what I've gathered, the VFD will train people of all ages (mostly children, though) and whenever you finish your training, no matter what age you are, you're officially admitted into the VFD.
