[glow=red,2,300]Chapter 1[/glow]
If you have ever been on a roller coaster, you know how it feels when riding it. You go up and down, loop to loop and around and around, all in about less than 2 minutes. When you get off, you may feel excited, or you may throw up.
This was how the Baudelaires felt as they traveled down Dippy Road. Dippy Road is a long road that is avoided by many people because of the way it's designed. The road consists of many hills, so all you do is go up then down, up then down, up then down, and up and down all the way til the end of the road. This can cause some people to get carsick. Even though the Baudelaires never got motion sickness, but as they traveled along Dippy Road, they were strting to feel a little nausus.
"This road certainly is very hilly," said Mr. Poe coughing into his hankerchief. Mr Poe was the banker in charge of the Baudelaire fortune. He was also in charge of providing them with proper guardiens, and I'm sorry to say that he wasn't doing a very good job at this. Their first guardien was a greedy evil man named Count Olaf. All he even cared about was getting his dirty hands on the Baudelaire fortune, and he had almost suceeded 3 times. Just as when it was almost too late, the Baudelaires revealed his plan. Unfortunately, Count Olaf always escaped in the end. Their last 2 guardiens, Uncle Monty and then Aunt Josephine, were very nice people and were much better than Count Olaf, but again unfortunately, they met their tragic demise from Count Olaf.
"This road certainly is very hilly," Mr. poe said again when he stopped coughing.
"Yes it is," Violet said cluching her stomach as they drove over the 10th hill. Violet, who was 14, was looking out the window with her hair tied up in a ribbon to keep it out of her eyes. When people saw her like this, it meant that her brain, and it's many gears, were at work thinking of an invention. Currently, Violet was trying to think of an invention that would prevent one's stomch from feeling nausus while traveling on hilly roads.
"I wonder how much longer this road goes," said Klaus leaning back in his seat and closing his eyes, hoping that that would help the feeling in his stomach go away. Klaus was 12, and loved to read books. He remembered reading about roller coasters and how they gave you that funny feeling inside. He opened his eyes to find, to his disappointment, that they were still traveling on Dippy Road.
"Bounce!" Sunny, the infant Baudelaire, shrieked as she bounced in her seat when they went over the 20th hill. As a baby, Sunny was very small, but had four very sharp teeth which she used to bite things. Also as an infant, she spoke in a way that was hard to understand. By "Bounce!" she probably meant "I liked bouncing in my seat at first, but now I wish I could stop because it's starting to make me feel sick.
Klaus smiled at Sunny, grabbed her and put her on his lap, and crossed his arms over her so it made a sort of seatbelt, and in which she stopped bouncing.
"Mr. Poe," Violet said coming out of her inventing thoughts. "Where exactly are we going?"
"I have sent you to live with Mr. and Mrs. Dawney, who own the Inland Inn," Mr. Poe replied.
"We're living in an inn?" Klaus asked looking puzzled.
"Yes," Mr. Poe said. "You are living in an inn. You, of course, will be staying for free, and provided with food. And I have given the owners a complete description of Count Olaf, so you don't need to worry about him coming to find you again.
"Fraud!" Sunny cried. By this she meant, "But Count Olaf is always in disguise."
"Oh, you don't need to worry about that," Mr. Poe said, but I'm sorry to say that they had to worry. "Oh! Here's the end of the road finally. We're almost there."
All the Baudelaires had funny feelings in their stomachs. Part of it was from traveling along Dippy Road. But the other part was from knowing that they were almost at their new home. They felt particularly nervous because they were going to be living with complete strangers. The other part was they had a feeling that Count Olaf would be back in their lives once again to commit a terrible scheme.
