I present to you, the diary of Hector.
According to me, Hector is 33. Do the easy math.
Day 1, June 21st, 1992 I've decided to keep a diary, to keep my sanity. L said it's dangerous for any of us to keep a diary, but I have some excellent hiding places. In my basement, I keep a mini-fridge behind my desk. I have several jugs of beverages, and behind the beverages is a fake stuffed crow. In the stuffed crow, I will keep this book. The stuffed crow scares me and I hate looking at everytime I have to take this out and put it back. I hate this place. There are too many rules. And so much cleaning and fixing.
August 5th, 1992 I know what I'll do! I'll build a hot air mobile home that will never go down, so I don't have to face the world! I hate this place. I want to escape. Now, to start bulding...
August 7th, 1992 I have just been informed that diaries are illegal.
November 1st, 2002 I don't care, I must report this--The Baudelaires are living with me! This is superlative! Of course, the fact that their guardians are either dead or on the other side of the schism is not superlative.

November 31st 2002 I don't have to worry about laws anymore! I'm in my self-sustaining hot air mobile home. Violet Baudelaire helped me build it. Unfortunately, she's not here. The Quagmires are. Olaf in his detective disguise attacked us with arrows, so the ladder broke, among other things, so there's little hope of finding the Baudelaires. But we're still trying. Duncan and Isadora are building a longer, stronger ladder, and I'm working on the engine so it can go down. Unfortunately, I'm not making much progress.
December 8th, 2002 The ladder is ready and it can go pretty far down. I couldn't make the sshamh's (I'll be using initials to save time, and so my hand doesn't hurt) engine go all the way down, but it can go close enough, if we see the Baudelaires. I don't know when to start training Duncan and Isadora. I don't even know if I'm allowed. J was supposed to be be their trainer, but he's dead. If only I had acted quicker. I was stupid to be afraid of old people in crow hats. I was stupid to make sure this balloon would never, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever go down. But there's no going back and undoing it and there are very important neophytes to be trained, and since I'm the only volunteer, I guess I have to do it. Hell, I don't even know what VFD stands for. I just know what it does.
