Principal Nero is, no doubt, taken from Emporer Nero, the evil emporer of Rome who fiddled while Rome burned. Nero is the evil prinicipal of Prufrock who fiddled. While the Bauds burned. Figuratively. The Bauds were being destroyed by Olaf, who's an arsonist.
If Handler keeps this up, this symbolism, which I doubt he will, the ASOUE series will have a happy ending. Even if he doesn't, this ASOUE will have to have a happy ending. Even though Rome burned, if I remember correctly, it was rebuilt. Let's say that it's not only the orphans who represent Rome but the mansion and the parents. The parents (at least, one of them) and the orphans (at least 6 of them) will be "rebuilt" and perhaps the mansion will, too.

That's an interesting idea, and I have some other ideas about Nero.
-He's an evil VFDer, which is why Lemony mentions him in the Bad Beginning Rare Edition notes, under the list of evil people.
-In The Austere Academy, there's a flashback about the Baudelaire parents going to a violin concert and saying that there is no worse sound that someone who cannot play the violin doing so anyway. Nero may have been the violinist.
-He definitely fiddled while the VFD headquarters burned. The headquarters, like Rome, were not built in a day, but they burned in a day.

if i remember correctly, Emporer Nero played a violin on the roof of a building while Rome burned.

Yes, Nero's mother killed the previous emporer (Claudius, the one with Cerebral Palsy) so Nero could come to the throne, and then Nero killed her. Such a happy family. I wonder if Nero has any siblings.
