These books are all about misfortune, misery and mystery.
what or where do you think is the most likely location where this story takes place?
I have two: New York or Winipeg.
Reasons why:
When people say "the city" they usually refer to New york City .
The movie will be fimed in New york.
Lemony Snicket attends a ball which is hosted by the "dutchess of winnipeg" they might be referring to a last name when they say "Winnipeg" but...
What do you think?

The books don't take place anywhere, that's the point. There is such a place as Winnipeg, true, but it doesn't have a dutchess. There is such place as Arizona too, but it doesn't have a king. It's all Daniel Handler's little joke. He doesn't want to constrain his tales by the limitations of real locations, because there are no such places as Swarthy Swamp, Briny Beach, or Mortmain Maountains.

They are totally in Alberta, CA.
Let me tell you why. For one thing Calgari, ie, Calgary.
Then there are the Badlands, & Hoodoos in Alberta, the Plains that lead into the Rocky Mountains, of which Calgary is at the base of.
Then there is this - The Burmis Tree, Crowsnest Pass, Alberta. "The twisted and dramatically wind-sculpted Burmis Tree is probably the most photographed and painted tree in all of Canada. A testament to the rugged weather of the Crowsnest Pass area, this 735-year-old limber pine fell in 1988, but was re-erected and remains one of the most recognizable of Alberta's icons."
What does this sound just like?
Also, frozen waterfalls are a noticeable trademark of this area.

Also, look at this The Athabasca Glacier is one of Alberta's claims to fame.
"Athabasca Glacier - the ice flows over three great falls, that look like three terraces (look at picture on page 214 of TSS) at the head of the Athabasca Glacier."

Also, the Calgari Stampede (which could very well be his inspiration for the Calgari Carnival) is very well known. www.calgarystampede.com/stampede/All signs point to Alberta.

Ok, never mind. It was DH's wedding announcement, but the last part was part of another announcement.
But DH does visit Calgary University often, for various literary events.
