If it takes place anywhere, then it's in Europe, because there are counts and duchesses in the story and no other continent grants those titles to people, as far as I know.

Jacy and Mark are right. It takes place everywhere and nowhere. But if it took place in a certain place, that place would have to be Austrailia. If you want proof then go back a few pages and look at the millions of this same thread and you will see. Lucky Sam.

It's like the Simpsons, it takes place in an area that is like that of the U.S., but does not exist. Though San Francisco is very much like the city that the Baudelaires are from.
