Perhaps the crew(VFDers) determined the general location of the mysteriously important sugar bowl by charting ocean currents. They'd determine where the sugar bowl would end up at the shore after floating downstream, and where it would go from there on out--to the grotto.

I like the idea that Ike could be there, but that would mean it would have 2 be somewhere near Aunt Josephine's ex-house's hill.... wouldn't it?

The grotto could be a V.F.D. hideout, but if Ike is there, the Baudelaires won't meet him. It says so on page 284 of The Slippery Slope.
"And none of the Baudelaires would ever meet some of the organization's most beloved volunteers, including...C. M. Kornbluth and Dr. Isaac Anwhistle..."
Just an observation.

[glow=green,2,300]it is a hideout because there are a lot of hints that give it away such as the lamps that say V.F.D., the passages above the grotto[/glow]

Well I recently read the Grim Grotto, and I don't want to give much away. ;D I'm evil. And I'm a well-read person. I'm not evil like I-want-to-kill-you-and-take-every-good-thing-from-you type evil, just a teaser evil!! It's true that the Gorgian Grotto is a VFD hideout, but not really. I think it was more of meeting place. Ooopsies, I think I've said to much already!

I made a correct theory! *brag brag*
And the grotto apparently used to be a meeting place; there was a machine that could drain the water from it. I'd love to see it in the (vaguely possible) TGG movie, and hopefully get a look at the interestingly tiled floor.
