Hey! Sory I've been gone for a while. Wel, I just wanted to see twhat users for 667 think about Hotel Denoument. What it looks like, what'll happen inside, where it is, any thingabout Hotel Denoument. (Kinda like my Olaf's Tower thing, eh? ) I really hope it doesn't get locked. I'm not good at knowing where to put new threads (obviously)

Merely moved to Perilous Places, I think. I'm rather surprised, actually, that we don't have a thread on this already. Or maybe we did. We already know quite a bit about the hotel. The bellhops, and probably the staff in general, wear orange uniforms. Where it is? In or near the city, I think. What it looks like? Er, not completely out-of-place and wacky, but rather grand. What'll happen inside? Certain events - you know what I'm talking about - probably belong best in this thread, but in general, I think that at some point there may well be an arson attack.

I agree with Dante about it being grand. It'll probably be rather creepy, though. Maybe there will be some of those old black and white photos on the walls where it feels like the peoples' eyes are following you. *shudders* Ugh.

In the first of the images we got in Mystery the Second, there was a vase decorated with eyes. The entire hotel could be rather like Olaf's house - decorated with eyes everywhere to show, to those who know, that it's a volunteer safe place.

Good catch on that one, Dante.

My guess is that it will be very, very tall...tall enough for Hector's self-sustaining mobile home to land on top. Hey, the Bauldelaires have to get in the air somehow...(Grim Grotto)

According to our tnn.com triptych, there are only nine floors (although this is circumstantial evidence). Is 90-100 feet enough? Maybe this doesn't include an "L" floor for lobby - that could also be very tall, adding to the height.

Has anyone noticed Daniel Handler's initials backwards are HD, Hotel Denoument? Curious, very curious...

That's an interesting coincidence, but I don't think it was on purpose. "Denouement" means "conclusion", or literally "the untying of a knot".
It seems that the hotel is quite large, large enough to contain its own restaurant and, according to later evidence, a spa. There's also apparently someplace near it where you might have a picnic.

I wonder if it will be already run by bad guys...

Um, I wanted to make a thread on this, so I'll post my opinions here. MILD SPOILERS BELOW
I loved the Hotel Denouement-the way it looks like a reflection, only for the real thing to be backwards. The description of it was really effective, and I would definatley go stay there if it was nearby.

Aye, the hotel is really interesting. Handler didn't mention in the narrative that it was decorated with eyes, but Helquist drew it that way, and I really liked the look of it. The clock was pretty neat, too, although it probably gets annoying after a while.

The hotel does seem like a really cool place. I really liked the reflection-ness of it, too. And the illustration of the huge dome is great.

Here's an odd thing about the Hotel Denouement that I noticed and I haven't seen mentioned yet: the room numbering on different floors is not symmetrical.
On the 6th floor, Room 674 faces the sea (p. 112) and room 613 faces the pond(p. 116).
On the 3rd floor, Room 371 faces the sea (p. 130).
In the basement, room 025 (the laundry room) apparently faces the pond.
It looks like the rule is that on even floors, even rooms face the sea, and on odd floors it's the other way around. Or they might be random.

I like the idea that on every other floor, the room numbers are arranged backwards; it's another example of the hotel's reflection motif.
