Dear Reader, May we implore you to have a thought for your health this fine Monday morning. You may feel sound, even sprightly, but all that could change in the blink of the tattoo of an eye on a villain's ankle were you to view a new trailer posted online. While our profession unfortunately compels us to watch this series of clips from Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unforunate Events, that is no reason for you to suffer with us. Were you to watch this sorry tale, you might see a dastardly villain, a herpetologist – a word which here means "Billy Connolly playing an expert on reptiles" – a widowed lady with a keen interest in grammar and three sorry orphans facing a terrible fate. While our professional opinion forces us to the conclusion that this looks like a most expertly adapted film, with a Burton-esque feel to it, well-timed comedy and excellent casting, we must nevertheless beseech readers to save themselves the misery which will doubtless be occasioned by the observation of a series of such unfortunate events. However, for any masochists – a word which here means "people unaccountably still keen to watch such a depressing tale" – out there, you will find this trailer here. Note: Apologies to Mr Snicket for the mimicking of his prose style. We respectfully beg his pardon and send our condolences on the fate of his adored Beatrice. Lest there be any doubt, we think the books are highly entertaining, the trailer most promising and we await further developments with keen interest. www.empireonline.co.uk/site/news/newsstory.asp?news_id=15905

Here's another one (BTW, I love posts like these) If you prefer your holidays gently stuffed with sugarplums, stick to "Polar Express." "Lemony Snicket," the most hotly anticipated kid flick since the first "Harry Potter," is best left to those with a taste for something tart. Based on Daniel Handler's immensely popular children's books, the story follows the aptly named Baudelaire siblings, whose lives become increasingly - well, read the title. After their parents die, they're sent to stay with a morbid series of relatives, the worst of whom is greedy Count Olaf (this is the Grinch Jim Carrey was truly born to play). As you may have guessed from the "Gorey" details, the movie shouldn't be dismissed as mere child's play: the supporting cast alone - Meryl Streep, Jude Law, Timothy Spall, Billy Connolly, Jennifer Coolidge and Cedric the Entertainer —ought to be enough to intrigue any grownup. Offspring, of course, will need no encouragement to attend in droves. E.W. www.nydailynews.com/entertainment/movies/story/224117p-192539c.html
