I have a lot of faith in the ASOUE movie, although I know a lot of people are doubting Jim Carrey and Brad Silberling's ability to capture everything the book had to offer on the big screen. First of all, I think a lot of people need to STOP WORRYING! Here's why...
1) Daniel Handler wrote the script.
2) Brad Silberling will manage to keep it dark and creepy. He's worked on a few Burton-like films in the past, and I believe he directed Capser. Though Casper was a VERY childish film, it still had a very dark feel to it.
3) Okay, okay, now for the MAJOR issue: Jim Carrey. I understand a lot of people are crapping their droors in fear that Jim will turn it into a comedy. Well guess what? The books were meant to be humorous. Either way, Jim looks EXACTLY like Olaf on the cover of the books. AND HAVE YOU HEARD THE WAY HE TALKS? Very creepy.
4) Meryl Streep and Jude Law would never sign on to a film unless they knew it would be uber successful. They're both academy award winners.
5) Klaus does not have thick, round glasses, because the director wanted to avoid being compared to Harry Potter. Nevertheless, Klaus DOES have glasses, they are just frameless. LIVE WITH IT!
6) I have read part of the script, and I can assure you that the humor is genuine, not typical Jim Carrey humor. A part that made me crack up, is when the Baudelaire's are at Aunt Josphine's house, there is a knock at the door, and when Aunt Josephine opens the door, it's a realtor. She screams REALLY loud, and slams the door on the realtor's face. I don't know why I found this humorous, but it was. That is what we call DRY HUMOR. Nothing wrong with that.
7) After Paramount took the press on a tour of the set, it got nothing but positive feedback. The dark feel will be there!
8) The kids all have acting experience (even Shelby and Kara) and they have done a great job in past performances!
So chill out! The ASOUE movie will kick some major ***!

I have always had faith in the movie, but I wanted to let you know that these are very good points! Good work.

Oh, give me a break. I have total faith in this film and cant wait. I cant point out one flaw Ive seen so far. But your list of reasons actually sucks bad.
1) Handler wrote the ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY! He didnt write the current script. Get that through your head, everyone!
2) Brad Silberling, Jim Carrey, Jude Law, etc. all KNOW WHAT THEY ARE DOING! Regardless of past roles which supposedly define them, they are professional actors/directors/crew members, etc. Just because they can be funny or serious or whatever in one movie does not mean they arent right for the film. They get paid tons of cash for a freakin reason!
3) Jim Carrey: read above, hes overpaid, hes good, get over it.
4) Okay, that is a good point. The actors would never sign on a film they didnt have faith in...unless they were being offered wads of cash for it. They were, but that is besides the point.
5) Ive been saying repeatedly that was the reason why Klaus doesnt wear his glasses all the time. I havent heard it anywhere before me, I just imagine that is the reason why, and it makes sense.
6) Okay, so you read some of the script, want a cookie or something? It doesnt take a genious to realize that the humor of Lemony Snicket is odd and sometimes a bit dry, which is good. In fact, it takes someone who can read and thats about it. All they have to do is read the books. If such humor wasnt going to be incorperated into the film, it would flop in the box office before you could say the full title of the film.
7) Right again, nothing but good feedback from press and trailer-reviewers all over. I agree with that one.
8) And yeah, they are good actors/actresses. Ive seen their work. Very nice.
You see, even if people at this forum dont like what they are doing with the movie (I disagree with anyone who doesnt like the stuff weve seen so far, I cant wait for the film) and see the movie, theyre bound to like the movie. This happens all the time. Poeple run thier mouths about how terrible they KNOW it will be then they go and see the movie and walk out beaming with popcorn-yellow smiles, talking rapidly about the things they liked. It happened with just about any comic book/super hero movie, it happened with Harry Potter, and its bound to happen with this.
People, sit back and enjoy the movie and stop bothering to read 8 reasons why the movie will be good. Chances are, if you cant determine those reasons for yourself, people like Mr. Wonderful and myself shouldnt be telling you them.

Mr Wonderful74 how did you get to read part of the script. (Just Wondering.) And I believe everything you wrote about the 8 reasons beacuse they were well thought.

1. It has Emily Browning in it. 2. It has Jim Carrey in it. 3. It takes away holiday cheer. 4. I can finally proove to kids at school that I'm not a retard screaming "Cakesniffer!" at everyone. 5. It is based on an awesome book series. 6. Daniel Handler wrote the screenplay. 7. Maryll Streep is playing Aunt Josephine. 8. I can't think of an eighth reason.

I've looked at several threads today, and in every one of them, you've been shouting at people, because they don't agree with you. YOU are not always right. YOU are not in control of other people's opinions. YOU need to stop having a go at everyone! All they are doing is saying their opinion, just the same as you. How would you feel if someone started shouting at you JUST BECAUSE YOU THOUGHT IT WAS GOOD? Think about it.

1) Daniel Handler wrote the script. Yet his version of the script was edited and revised by...whom? Who is revising it and what do we know about this person? The books are indeed meant to be humorous, but in a tragicomic sort of way, not in a "let's see Jim Carrey making silly faces and seagull noises" sort of way. The problem is with him making it the wrong sort of comedy. Yet I must admit that his makeup is amazing. And you misspelled "drawers." And don't shout so much. Everything else in your post I pretty much agree with and/or don't feel like replying to.

Chances are, if you cant determine those reasons for yourself, people like Mr. Wonderful and myself shouldnt be telling you them. Wow. I was just trying to contribute something to the boards, and just reassure the users that the movie will be fine, on the count of I've been seeing a lot of negativity reguarding the movie. I don't care if you think the movie will be good, lots of people don't. I was just trying to help, and obviously you had to storm in here and ruin it all. Olaf's Associate? More like Olaf's Ass. I was just trying to make a few relevant points, and I noticed that in your reasons, you pretty much repeated exactly what I had said, just added a bit of attitude into it. Ah, yes, and while we're on the topic of how you are SO positive that the movie will turn out good, tell me this... Have you read the script? Didn't think so. I have connections with Paramount, and I have read a brief clip of it, and from what I've read, I liekd it. AND YES! I WOULD LIKE A COOKIE. So until you can back yourself up, don't post anymore.

Everything else in your post I pretty much agree with and/or don't feel like replying to. Regarding the script: from the scuttlebutt I've seen, Handler's script has been largely rewritten by Robert Gordon (this is confirmed on IMDB.com). This could be a GOOD thing, believe it or not, because those same voices whisper that the original script was, well, not good, and changed the story much more than the current incarnation does. Remember that old post in this forum about the Paramount intern leaking that the Reptile Room was being done as a puppet show? That would have been around the time Handler was contributing. Sadly, Robert Gordon's credits are Men In Black II and Galaxy Quest. I can't say I'm filled with confidence by his body of work, but I'll give him the benefit of the doubt. Also, I have to point out that Meryl Streep and Jude Law, although they have won academy awards, are not a guarantee of quality. In fact, both were involved in Kubrick/Spielberg's overwrought A.I. (Streep did the voice of the Blue Fairy). In Meryl Streep's skeleton closet we have the Roseanne Barr vehicle "She-Devil". In Jude Law's closet, we have "eXistenZ". In spite of it all, I have great faith that Snicket will be an entertaining film.

Sometimes i wish William Goldman had written the script. He wrote The Princess Bride (the book AND the movie) he also does scripts for Stephen King's movies (some with more success than others) OH WELL

The thing about the script. Daniel Handler tackled the task at the beginning, but the company I believe suggested that they let someone else work on it. I don't know the persons name, butthey have our beloved babies in their hands. And it trust them, like any butchering over paid script writer. ;D Awww sarcasm is a marvelous thing.

I heard about the puppet show too. It struck me as odd that Handler would change the script based on his own books so much. However, this was Handler's first screenwriting project, right?
