What sort of reviews do you think the film will recieve? Personally, I'm rather pessimistic. If you read reviews of the books, there's a general consensus that the humorous writing style is what makes them good, more than the story or rather weak characterizations. It will be hard to capture the writing style in a film, although Snicket's voiceover narration will be used. However, the movie seems to have its good points, particularly the set and costumes.

The movie will get really good reviews, but its too early to decide. They havent even released the movie poster yet.

I'm not sure .... gotta wait and see more trailers before I can deside. (then again a good portion of trailers portray the films wrongly ...)

If the trailers are anything to go by, the films will be okay and reasonably faithful to the books. But then there's the problem of Jim Carrey's manic behavior.

I don't think the movie will be as well-received by the critics as the Harry Potter movies were. True fans of the books will have a hard time accepting the movie too, because it will probably not be as true to the books.
Critics will probably only give it 2 or 3 stars, maybe more if Jim Carrey puts in a good performance.

"Film critics as a class have absolutely no idea of what they're talking about. They natter on and on about directors without understanding much at all about how little the director does compared to the writer. They praise unwatchable garbage just so they can appear cooler and edgier than their rival critics."

Critics weren't exactly crazy about Harry Potter at first. The books sold a lot of copies, a lot of buzz surrounded the books, Hollywood thought it would be a good way to cash in, a movie was announced, it came out, fans loved it, critics sort of agreed, they're some of the most successful movies of all time!
I think Lemony Snicket will either do EXTREMELY WELL (as in an average of 3-4 stars out of a possible 5, $50-70 million opening weekend, 2 thumbs up from ebert & roeper, hp fans will enjoy it etc) OR it will flop miserably ($20-30 million opening weekend, 0-2 stars, thumbs down from ebert & roeper, or just thumbs up from ebert (he's too easy), hp fans will accuse it as a copycat, fans of the books will cry and complain that it isn't 110% RIGHT ON THE DAMN BOOKS etc)
I hope it succeeds. I really do.

Ebert and Roeper may not like this movie at all. If one of those two critics like it, it will be Roger Ebert (For the cinematography.) Roper though will say something like: So I don't care about this movie at all. It is DUMB and I fell asleep the 1st time I watched it. Jim Carrey plays a horrible role in the weird movie.

That sounds like the kind of thing Roper would say. In general, he doesn't like children's movies; I think he gave thumbs down to at least one Harry Potter film. On the Snicket film, he'd probably also rant "The characters are nothing but plot devices and the whole thing is totally contrived!" That's the sort of thing that bad Amazon reviews say about the books.

Roeper didn't give any thumbs down on HP movies but he did give thumbs down to every LOTR film.

Ebert & Roeper both gave thumbs down to all three Harry Potter films, as well as LOTR. I think Ebert will enjoy ASOUE, seeing as he loves children's movies (one of his favorites of the year was Garfield, which critics everywhere bashed). I think it will get two thumbs up though. Why? Mainly because of Jude Law and Meryl Streep, but also because Jim Carrey has taken on a role like nothing ever before. I don't know how they'll feel about the cinematography and the Burton-esque feel. They tend to dislike Burton's films, for some reason, seeing as they rarely get thumbs up. I also think it will be classified as a Potter knockoff. That wouldn't surprise me.
My Ebert & Roeper predictions:
"Jim Carrey did a fantastic job, and Emily Browning was stunning. The dark feel of the movie really set a mood, and I definitely give it thumbs up." -Roger Ebert
"I'm sorry Roger, but I'm going to have to disagree with you. Lemony Snicket is just another children's book adaptation. It's a dull and repetative movie that will entertain the most shallow of audiences. If I wanted to see a middle-aged man dress up in various costumes, I'd go to a drag queen pageant. Meryl Streep was enjoyable, I loved Jude Law as the narrator, and I think that the child actors were fantastic, but everything else was a disaster. Thumbs down." -Richard Roeper
But then again, you never know... ESOTSM was critically acclaimed and made a fair amount at the box-office, and Bruce Almighty got two thumbs up and made $70 million opening weekend. Meryl Streep's Manchurian Candidate opened with a solid $20 million, and was one of the best-reviewed films of 2004. Sky Captain, Jude Law's latest film, is one of the most anticipated (#7 on EW's list) and is sure to bring home the bacon. Kids will recognize Liam Aiken from Good Boy!, which was a mild success, and they'll love Browning and the Hoffman twins.
I expect to hear the words "Dark", "Hilarious", "Brilliant", "Harry Potter", "Tim Burton" and "Repetative" a lot in critics reviews.

Awww, don't write that. You're making me feel like an inferior pessimist. Personally, I'm rather pessimistic. I love your pessimism.

Check the audio files at www.movies.com. Also what you just said sounded a lot like them. I think I would like Roper though if he started throughing funiture at Ebert. LOL!
