THis movie has a lot of connections to the HP movies, i thought it was pretty interesting. Brad Silberling: Was one of the first to bring up the idea of having an HP movie and was the runner up directior for the first one Liam Aiken: Was in the running to play HP himself (he must be pretty happy with this role) Steven Spielberg: Was in the running to direct HP until he dropped out to do something else (this happens to him a lot). Dreamworks is the one of the companies taking care of the creative process for ASOUE. There were a lot more but i have forgetten them now

Of the four, two directors have had previous experience helming kids-oriented fantasy flicks (Gilliam with Time Bandits, Columbus with Home Alone). Silberling would possibly bring a more cerebral element to the film, as he did with the adult romantic fantasy City of Angels), and Mr. Alan Parker would be just plain be a bizarre, albeit kinda cool choice. Parker's proven himself to be a versatile enough director to switch between genres instantly. www.coronaproductions.com/~corona/films/details/harrypotterA.html

Yes, Spielberg dropped out of a lot of films for many reasons, including Harry Potter.
I didnt know that liam was in talks to play Harry at one point. I am glad with Radcliffe because he looks like Harry, though.
Okay then, cyas all!

Ugh.... No, the trailer isnt much like HP at all. God, you guys must be those annoying sort of newbies. Except you, pop, youve been around enough to be considered an honerary member of 667. Nothing wrong with newbies, lots wrong with annoying ones.

am i an annoying newbie?
ok back on topic, the trailer when they were in Poe's car on the way to Olaf's seemed a little HPesque, but not much, enough for me to make the connection but not enough for it to become an obvious link to me. (not relevent but i totally lov violets dress, it is just fab!)

C: Klaus wears glasses. Harry wears glasses.
Klaus likes books. Hermione likes books.
The Baudelaires are orphans. Potter is an orphan.
Violet has hair. Hermione has hair.
ASOUE was adapted from a book. HP was adapted from a book.
Perhaps the most startling coincidence of all...
JK Rowling and Daniel Handler are both literate.
Coincidence? I think NOT.

And more coincidences:
Hogwarts is a boarding school. Prufrock is a boarding school.
Olaf is evil. Voldemort is evil.
VFD is a secret group. The Order of the Phoenix is a secret group.
Sunny has sharp teeth. Lupin the Werewolf has sharp teeth.
And Dupin rhymes with Lupin!

Well the trailer did look like the THIRD HP movie . . . until the kids stepped into Olaf's house, then it just got bizzare But if some of you did some similarityin the style of the movies, a lot of other people have as well: Silberling gets his chance to shake the flakes off of his resume (Moonlight Mile, City of Angels) with his adaptation of Daniel Handler's children's book series. Despite lush and loving production design, though, we're having trouble shaking off the ghosts of Harry Potter & Co (not to mention Tim Burton), what with the emphasis on the fantastical. www.imdb.com/nowplaying/2004/12It's probably because HP was first, the comparisons between styles will continue though the contents of each differ

Okay, Ive just heard the dumbest thing. sorry, but I have to point this out:
Voldemort is evil. Count Olaf is evil.
Okay, your point? If everything that had an evil character was compared to Harry Potter, wed be in a lot of trouble.
Anything with a dark tone can look a bit like the 3rd HP movie, simply because the third HP movie was made to be much darker than the first 2, so I can see that "similarity." (even if it isnt a similarity at all, but just a likeness of styles which was made due to the change of a director in HP3).
No, Amber, you arent newbyish because I dont know you that well, so you havent annoyed me. You seem to be a little more down to earth than some of these people.

Another comparison www.canada.com/ottawa/ottawacitizen/news/arts/story.html?id=018ef232-16b4-46a6-8951-b19d7af52370Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events The first three novellas in the series by Daniel Handler are telescoped into a story starring Jim Carrey as Count Olaf, the comic villain of many disguises who pursues the poor, orphaned Baudelaire children, bent on capturing their family fortune. Meryl Streep plays Aunt Josephine. Bottom line: It could be the new Harry Potter. (Opens Dec. 17)

Nothing wrong with newbies, lots wrong with annoying ones. I don't think the HP and Snicket stories are very similar, but the begining of the trailer (to me) reminds me of HP (mainly because of the music and the orphan theme. they also both feature a fantasy style) Just because I have an opinion that differs from yours shouldn't make me "an anoying sort of newbie".
