Can't say i like coconut cake myself. Chocolate, sunshine or pound are much better in my opinion. But if anyone has Uncle Monty's cake recipe I'd be glad to try it. The recipe itself could have hidden messages.

Hm... coconut... that reminds me... I still have some of those super-chocolatey frog cookies in the fridge...
Anyway... I've never noticed much about the cake. Do you think that all the mentionings were coincidences? Perhaps because "cake" is often associated with good times, it was the first thing that came to the author's mind...
I just had a thought... in a way, TBB is kind of like Episode IV of Star Wars. Since it has a lot to establish in the way of a storyline, the plot is very straightforward and could easily stand on its own as a story.

The first books of series are often like that. I can think of many a book that didn't need a sequel but was meant to be a series. There are many books that got sequels that they didn't need because the first book was successful. Only some books, like the lord of the rings, do you truly need all of them.

ooo! of course i like TBB...but i would also like to mention (is there even a NEED?) of lemony's ingeniousness... you look at so many other series books...and you notice how over time, the style of the author changes over time. (take JK Rowling for example, you can distinctly see her improvement in her writing over time...and that makes it so that almost EVERYONE who is an HP fan almost DESPISES the first book...merely because it is written 'badly'...or not as good as the others are.) however, i think we can all be proud in our lil lemony for sticking to his style so well and being able to so effectively make his audience still LOVE TBB despite the arrival of 9 other books (SPEAKING OF WHICH...I HAVE SOOO MUCH TO SAY ABOUT THE SLIPPERY SLOPE BUT I DUNNO WHERE TO DO IT WITHOUT GIVING SOMETHING AWAY TO THOSE WHO HAVENT FINISHED IT YET...plus im fairly new to this site...actually COMPLETELY new...any advice?)

ARGH STUPID FORUM ATE MY POSTTTT
Anyway, to recap what I said real quick: TBB is the best of the pre-VFD books. It's darker, has a tighter story, awesome characterization and I'd actually reread it, as opposed to RR-AA. The series lightened up a lot after BB (or maybe RR. Protip, don't blow the murder three chapters in, Handler).
Also, Italian food mentioned on page one: lasagna in AA I think, tagliatelle grande in CC and Lucafont wants to eat pizza in Hostile Hospital.

Stephen thinks The Bad Beginning was a great book to start the series, but it's not his favorite of the first three books. Stephen's favorite part was probably when Klaus found out about Olaf's plan. ;D

The Bad Beginning is one of the weaker book of the series, but the best of the earlier books. It's dark and funny, and Olaf's behavior toward Violet is of a sort hardly seen since. However, my favorite books are the more recent ones, from the autobio onwards.
