I suppose I could go pick up the first book once again, but I would prefer to hear it from youz guys.
Was the Count rich in the beggining? If he was it doesn't make sense to me that he would go through soooo much trouble for money that he doesn't very well need that much of.

The Count says to Mr. Poe in TBB that he will use some of the Baudelaire fortune to spruce the place up, then Mr. Poe says he can't get the money. He's been short of cash since the beginning.

Yep, he is either living in squalor (no pun intended) because he's poor, or because he's filthy and lazy.

He could've had money though. Being rich doesn't mean your not interested in earning more. Look at Lex Luther.

If money was all he wanted, he could just marry Esme and get it over with.

He doesn't want just money, he wants MORE money. Even if you get more money, you can still want more money: Esmé does. It never ends.

<Incoming transmission...> <Transmission received.> <Open? (Y/N): Y>
Esmé is rich; ergo, Count Olaf is rich. Plus, if he can get either the Baudelaire OR the Quagmire fortune, he will be even richer than Esmé. However, he still wants to get BOTH fortunes. By the end of The Slippery Slope, however, we find out that Esmé is more interested getting revenge on Beatrice (What's this about? Does anyone know anything not in the books?) and the sugar bowl (same questions as before). (Please do not answer the questions unless you have either found your answer from another source, or have some proof/reasons for your answer.) Olaf is still interested only in the fortunes, however. So, Olaf cares about nothing but money, while Esmé cares also for vengeance...
<End transmission.>

I don't think Count Olaf's got much money, and I don't think Esme will share her money with him. It seems like everyone in VFD either possesses a fortune before joining, or obtains a fortune somehow through VFD. So presumably, Olaf had a fortune at one point, but either he spent it or it was confiscated when he went all evil, or something. So he must be hungry for more...he doesn't seem to be making much with his crappy plays.
