I think that the odors are "opportune" because they cover up the smell of dead bodies(including dear dead Monty) thrown into Swarthy Swamp. Perhaps the factory is somehow connected to Sir and his mill, or gives horseradish to VFD. But what would VFDers(or anyone else) want with large amounts of horseradish?

maybe they use the horseradish with their disguises or maybe, just maybe, some people actually LIKE horseradish (sorry its the closest thing to a vomiting smiley i can find!)

maybe its the costume thing or maybe its the Count Olaf HQ place where his trouppe can meet safely. Then again, there are "big" people in his trouppe and maybe they wanted to have horseradish for a snack or something.

It's good that the VFD disguise kit, as a far as we know, includes no horseradish. That stuff smells bad. I wonder if Olaf likes it? Seemingly, he just likes the smell of it, which covers up the smell of any decaying dead people he throws into Swarthy Swamp. My father likes horseradish sauce on his roast beef....
