I think the quality imprvoes around book eight -- probably beacuse they are better written, more humorous and the way DH takes allusions literally is quite good -- the first 6 or so are all quite repetative and follow similar plots.

Thx evry1 i also forgot to ask does snicket stop explaining what words mean, i am quite a mature reader and i find this rather irratating. The definitions continue, but occur less frequently. However, I like them. You get a fancy word and an amusing definition at the same.

The series goes quite uphill after Book 7. You might have to read for a while, though, to get there.

Yes i do think they got better. Espxially since the whole VFD plot got introduced as before that it was getting a little repetitive! i like to think of the serious of books in stages.
1-4 : A beggining - Count oalf chases them and they escape etc
5-8 : VFD introduced
9-12 - Out on their own
13 - The end

I have read all 13 books. I know if the series gets worse or not. Here is the answer: IT'S SO SAD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It gets so worse that I don't think I'll ever read ASOUE again--I can't believe I just typed that!

I think the books from 1-6 are the best. Then from 7-12 are not as good. And it finishes with a greatie.

i think that the series gets alot more interesting. i think its because i saw the movie before i read the books but i often warn my friends that the first 4 books arent very good but after that it gets good on books the 10th 11th and 12th i read them all in one day a peice. but the plots and the secrets and suspense gets alot better. in my opinion even though people die in ever single book it never effected me because i was always worried about what else would happen with the bauldelairs. the humor is very dry but also very funny. like yall said it just depends on your taste.

I think it is a bit mixed. Some of the first books are excellent, but some are just okay, and the same goes for the books at the end.

I have read all 13 books (including the tag-alongs), and so I know that ASOUE never gets any better. There are some happy parts later in the series, but not that many (this is the truth). I wish I could tell you that it gets better, but I can't. Oh, yes, there's something else: On the back of TPP, it says it is the next to last book about the lives of the Baudelaire orphans. My sister read that part and told me that means that the children will die. This is not true! If anyone tells you anything like this, do not listen to them! The Baudelaires do not die at any time in the series! Sorry if I spoiled it for you...

I would definitely agree that the books do get better over time. They become less formulaic (i think that's the word) and the mysteries deepen. The definitions continue, but with more complicated words/explanations, as does the dark ironic humour of the books. The only later book that disappointed me was book 9. As an earlier poster said, it was more a plot to link books 8 and 10, and didnt really add to the entire plot as a whole.

I think that they do get better, but then slightly go down in qualtiy towards the end. [Literally]. Heres what I mean 1-4 Pretty good. Out of these four, part 3 or 4 is probably my favorite. 5-7 Getting better. Love the Austre Academy. Nero is so funny. 8-9 Takes a dive 10-11 Gets better again. In book eleven, one of my favorite quotes is introduced "He who hesitates is lost". 12-13 Good, but kind of dissapointing, in many ways.
Anyway, thats what I think about them. I always loved how Snicket would always give the definitions of some of the harder words; it was really funny how he described them. I also liked how he described the words through some pretty stupid [but funny] situations.

The style gets a bit less dark, and The Miserable Mill is horrible, but it does get better, in my opinion. Oh but The End sort of returns a bit to the "dark side".

I find it really funny how everyone on here bashes TMM the way they do. It wasnt bad, but it was by no means great. I do think it get's slightly better with more re-reads, though not by much.

The relative strengths and weaknesses of a book get exaggerated the more they are alluded to. If lots of people just found TMM not all that, or mildly disliked it, the effect of company will be to fast give TMM a reputation as "WORST BOOK EVER." Even the let-down some experienced from The End can't match up to years of TMM anti-hype. I think Fiona suffers from the same problem.
For my part, I think the series gets better, but I also think that it gets different, and that's not entirely the same thing as it being better or worse.
Edit: To clarify that last point: I think it would be perfectly possible to create a hypothetical post-TMM aSoUE without V.F.D., with more gothic happenings and less humour - or equally, to craft a pre-TAA aSoUE with more of the exaggeration, wit, and narrative points from the rest of the series. I think in a way we're dealing with two different series, but one of them doesn't last very long.
