Do we really know, in detail, what happened the day the baudelaire mansion burned down?
-it was caused by olaf (or esme) -they escaped through the tunnel to 667 dark avenue -in tbbre, it mentions olaf probably chatted with the baudelaire parents, with the whole "mug stain" on the table, presumably when olaf slammed it down, in a rage. -why did he do it? to kill the parents since they were in the "good" v.f.d.? or to get the fortune from the kiddies? or both?
any other details, questions, or answers?

Olaf did it all for Violet, because he has a thing for I-still-have-4-years-to-go-until-I'm-a-legal-adult girls.

Count Olaf had been burning down places either to get rid of good V.F.D. members or to get rid of important evendence that could send him to jail.

they also obtained the dark avenue apartment by having esme marry jerome, who lived there.
why was the passageway there in the first place, before esme married olaf?

Didn't it say somethnig like the Baudelaire children had seen Olaf at one of their parents dinner parties? I think they said it in TBB.

I think it said that the Bauds had seen Mr. Poe at the one of the dinner parties, many times. Not Olaf.

It was Olaf that burnt it down. I bet that he ether got into their will (as the first choice to look after the Baud's) ether by forgey (I highly doubt Olaf is a cousin) or by kissing up to the Baud's parents, so that he would be encluded. The first reason is likely because Olaf is too dim to notice such things or he was bribed by Olaf to say that he was related. This isn't very likely because even thought Poe's dim, he won't do anything to put the Baud's in any type of danger.

... even though Poe's dim, he won't do anything to put the Baud's in any type of danger. Not on purpose, I agree. Unfortunately, he doesn;t seem able to grasp the presence of danger as quickly as the children do.

I think that The Man With A Beard But No Hair and The Woman With Hair But No Beard burnt down the mansion...

I don't think it was just Olaf and/or Esme who burnt it down. I think the entire side of the bad V.F.D. helped burn the Baudelaire mansion down.
