I think that Count Olaf started the fire. Then, when he knew it was already too late, he sent his fire department. But what he didn't know was that a parent, presumably the Baudelaire mother, escaped into the passageway. Knowing that it was no longer a safe place, she stayed in the passageway until dark and escaped. Someone saw her and assumed it was a ghost.

Judging by evidence in the Rare Edition, Olaf made a "formal" visit to the Baudelaire parents, perhaps under the pretense of making a truce between the two sides of VFD. However, he betrayed them, first by leaving his glass on the table with no coaster(unsightly wet ring!), then by setting things on fire and running. I agree with Sugarhigh that the mother survived by entering the passageway, and that Olaf may have gotten his allies in on this.

I was just wondering this, so sorry if anyone has ever said this b4, or it's too stupid. But is there any reason why the fire that burnt down the Baudelaire's mansion was not at the same time as the VFD transcript in LSUA. T hink about it, in the transcript Olaf starts getting pretty angry towards the end which would give him reason to burn the mansion AND the transcript itself IS slightly burnt which suggests a fire.. Does anyone agree or is there some evidence somewhere that means they COULDN'T be the same thing?

His son? How do we know for sure that Olaf has a son, and furthermore that the son helped him start the fire? The Three Languages fairy tale in the autobio mentions an old count and his son, but that doesn't mean that Olaf really has a son.

Tell me again why you're so sure he has a son. Olaf's not even married, not currently anyway.

Well, I wouldn't put it past him to have children out of wedlock. But the a count and his son thing could mean Olaf's dad and Olaf himself.

That's certainly possible, because Olaf's father was probably a count as well. This would imply that Olaf knows (VFD)cricket language, so if any VFD crickets show up he'll be able to speak to them.

I agree. But, a count and his soon could be anyone realted to Count Olaf which in turn means related to the Baudelaires.
