I found the first 4 books lacking. They were repetitive and the books, as a series, had no plot. Anyone else feel this way?

Lemony's entire series has been called "formulaic" and synonyms thereof by people who never read past book the fourth. Indeed, the early books, and to a lesser extent books 5-7, were repetitive.

I disagree somewhat. I enjoyed books 3 and 4 a lot, book 1 quite a lot but less than most of the others, and book 2 perhaps slightly less than book 1.
I liked the guardian formula, while it lasted, though there is far more excitement now the children are alone against the world.

thats why Handler created VFD for the 5th book because he knew the books werent getting enough credit so he had to spice them up a bit. And his original contract was only for 4 books.
