Olaf probably knew that Olivia was in VFD. He is in VFD, although on the evil side. Olivia for sure knw that he was in VFD, after all her research. Maube Olivia's feelings go way back, from when thy were training in VFD together? ;0)

The lions were probably for throwing Violet and Klaus and getting them killed, instead of as a present for Olivia. Or maybe both.

I think that Olaf and Olivia are siblings (O&O) and she tells him everything so Esme didn't know so she tried to kill Olivia and so...that's how this whole mess started...b/c Olivia wants to stay true to her brother Olaf. And deeeeeeep down Olaf feels the same.

Given the similarity of their names, it is tempting to posit that the two are siblings rather than that Olivia suffers an unrequited love for Olaf. When we get around to rereading TCC, I'll try and watch out for this.

Doesn't 'Olivia Caliban' in The End cast doubt on that? (Though of course we're never told Olaf's surname, so I suppose it could be Caliban; I think it's rather hard to make that fit the rest of what we know about the Calibans, though.)

If you really loved the theory, you could probably argue that "Olivia Caliban" isn't necessarily the Olivia from TCC, and that would fit in quite snugly with The End. Disclaimer: I don't believe this theory. I just like to keep some possibilities open.

That'd look too fishy. What if someone saw the side that was supposed to be written on? They'd know Olaf was lying. They wouldn't care, they'd just enjoy the violence and slopy eating.

I agree with the theory that Olaf planned the supposed death of Violet and Klaus. As to the lions. . . If VFD headquarters was still standing, couldn't he have stolen them from there before it was burned down? Most of the people would have left the headquarters anyway.

That's true. Or the lions might at least have been penned nearby (near to the headquarters, that is). However, TSS implies that the sinister duo have been spending some weeks burning down the headquarters, in which case it would probably already be mostly gone during the events of TCC.

I thought Olaf would have been more upset at madame lulu since he thought she could tell him the answer to any of the questions. The plan does seem reasonable ts hough. I got angry when I read that madame lulu told him that chabo, beverly, and elliot were the Baudelaires and when the freaks cut the rope.

Madame Lulu - Olivia - is really quite a tragic character. She wants to do the right thing, but she's utterly broken by her naive personal philosophy and her hopeless love for Olaf.

Did she really love olaf? She acted like it in the beginning, but then it seemed that it was just an act.

I think Olivia's love for Olaf is really one of the driving forces of TCC's plot. It accounts for Esmé's murder plot, for example, and Olivia's betrayal of the Baudelaires. Olaf himself is clearly taking advantage of this with his sweet-talking of her and his gifts.

RE: Why Olaf didn't just let Olivia be Thrown In...
I feel like he might have had a smidgen of an attachment to her. He did get her those lions, after all, seemingly to pay her back when he could have just been greedy.

I think, if anything, Olaf was still under the impression she held all the answers- and she did indeed hold many of them- so throwing her into the lion pit would be losing those answers. He wasn't aware of her secret library, and could have been afraid that if he didn't pay her with something, she'd stop giving fortunes, and while he could have just threatened her, that might have led to false information.
