1. Characters obsessed with grammar 2. The book is a book that is a "document", written/being written by a character in the book

Lots of lit references. And lots of meta-humor too.

I agree with the above - Handler's style of writing is quite distinct. You can always tell when it's him. I love the referencing of classic lit - whenever I get it, I feel like I'm sharing an inside joke.

They both mention Poe, and To Esme-With Love And Squalor.

The "If you have to ask you can't afford it" in TB8 and TUA. The media is stupid (TB8 Winnie Moprah, ASOUE Daily Punctilio).

Anyone notice he dropped a little ASOUE reference? Maybe 4th page in, he refers to the events as "A Series of Unfortunate Behaviours".
LOTS of literary references, too. That's a big trademark, especially since the characters usually know they're making a reference.

Yeah, literary references are a staple of Handler. Also, secret societies. The Basic Eight is an elite club; as is The Grand Opera Breakfast Club. In ASOUE, there is, of course, the VFD. Not quite the same thing, but you see what I mean. I have a feeling Daniel Handler was part of a pretentious group of geeks when he was in highschool, which makes me happy. He's one of us! (Nerdy laughter ensues.)
