Does anyone know what medium Brett Helquist uses? I was just wondering if the cover illustrations are actual paintings, or if he just hands in a drawing and the publishing company colors it, or if they're colored on a computer or what. I assume the black and white illustrations are just drawings in ink or pencil, so I guess I'm mainly asking about the color illustrations.

I would guess they are paintings, but I'm not sure... The cover for the calendars definitely look like paintings, but the actually covers are too small to take a good guess at. Although I do think they're paintings... maybe his site has some information I've missed... I can't remember it saying anything about medium, though.

I'm just gonna guess and say that they're paintings, or something like paintings. ;D Most of them look like chalk pastels to be honest, or perhaps pen and ink with some gouache or watercolor fills and drybrushed paint details (that makes it look like chalk). Some of the later one, like the Marvelous Marriage in the rare edition, appear to be just straight paintings, either gouache or acrylic.

Wow...well, I'm not an art expert, so, all I'm gonna say is that...er....Brett Helquist's drawings are nice! Oh! Oh! And on the Subject of Brett Helquist, I was at my school library, (my mom is a library assistant, so I can get books whenever I want ;D) I passed by, and I saw a book with the author as Brett Helquist in tiny print . I know it said that for sure. I think it was a little kid's book, because it was an easy mystery detective's book. I've been trying to find that book ever since. But I kinda haven't had the time, 'cause I've been reading other books , that's probably half the reason I haven't found it yet.

According to the FlashCharts included in the Lemony Snicket binder, Brett Helquist interprets Lemony's dismal findings as dismal drawings and paintings. Therefore, the cover illustrations are most likely painted. By the way, I love this thread's title.

After examining the much larger illustrations in Roger, The Jolly Pirate, yes, they're definitely paintings with dry-brushed cross-hatching that gives the appearance of pastels when reproduced at smaller sizes like the ASOUE book covers.

Right. You can see the dry-brushing really well on the covers of the calendars, because they're reproduced bigger than the covers. Note Violet's dress on the cover or the 2004 calendar.
