I nominate Gigi. She organized the members online record-breaking thing, and it was a really good concept and quite well organized. The fact that it failed doesn't change that.
First, though, we need to decide that we're serious about this. And if we are, then we need to make that thread, and then choose a person to send the money to, and make sure we all have detailed instructions on what we're supposed to do (ex, exactly how to send money via PayPal, and to whom, and when, and all that fun stuff.) When does the bidding start again?
1. I'm flattered that you all think me so capable to get this done. I do alot on ebay. I have a Paypal account. However, I still feel kind of burned because of the Users Online fiasco. I just don't feel the commitment from folks here.
2. I was kind of thinking about bidding for myself. If the bidding didn't get too high, I was hoping to get it. No offense to anyone here, it's just easier solo. I wouldn't have to collect money or argue about a name.
3. IF I agree to spearhead this, I would ask that only people who are completely committed to definitely contributing money participate. I wouldn't want to be left holding the bag.
4. My only other concern is how we would choose a name.
Let me know what you think and I'll think about doing it.
1. I apologize that I wasn't here for this, but I don't even know what the users online fiasco is because, well, I wasn't online. But, it is not necessarily related to how members will respond to this. Some people who really like Snicket and really would contribute money, may just not be the type to do the users online thing, especially adults who may be more likely to have more money than kids.
2. I would totally understand if you wanted to bid for yourself and wish you the best of luck. Just hope I don't outbid you!!
3. I think it is possible to be assured of funds. The auction lasts 10 days. So if we decide to do this, I suggest we all make pledges ahead of time. After a couple of days we can see if it is a possibility or if we are totally blown out of the water right off the bat. If it seems possible, people contributing significant amounts can mail you post dated checks (post dated the day the auction ends or the day after). People who are contributing just a few dollars or even a dollar (I think with this many members it will be important to stress EVERY dollar will count) can mail you cash and a stamp. If we don't win the auction, you can mail their money back if they want. It should only take a few days for you to receive everyone's money, so you can have the money in hand before you ever bid! Just realizing all this is assuming that you are willing to give your address or have a P.O. Box. hmmm.
4. We would have to make a poll I guess. So far I like sixsixsevenforum.
I hope that you decide to do it, but of course, will understand if you don't.
I don't know what's with this whole sending cash scheme. I mean, people aren't going to mail money from Australia to the U.S., and even if they were, there wouldn't be time. Isn't there a way you can pool money online?
And Gigi, I know how you feel. It would be pretty trying to organize this whole thing. And I completely understand if you don't want to...I mean, I probably wouldn't want to. Perhaps because I've had far too many bad experiences with group projects in general... But anyway, as I think I stated in my previous post, I definitely agree that only people who are 100% certain that they're going to donate money should participate; otherwise, the whole thing could become completely messed up, with us bidding more than we're actually able to afford. However, I also think that if we really want to do this, we will be able to. However, we need everyone's effort, not just that of the person/people coordinating it. I think it's also fair that we expect and receive complete honesty on everyone's behalf, because otherwise this won't work.
And, I think we need to 1) decide that we're definitely doing this, 2) spread the word and tell everyone how to pool their money (which, by the way, I have no idea how to do...), and 3) get that thread started (in which only people who were completely certain that they would donate the amount of money they said they would would post...) before we get a name. We only need a name once we start bidding. There's a ton of stuff we need to do before then.
Edit: I really need to learn how to be more concise...
No, you completely make sense. And you are completely right about people being honest and committed. It would be a big responsibility and the person coordinating it would need lots of support.
The other thing I wish we knew, is how high the auction will go.

Definately. Online would surely be best. And for people who can or will do that, of course it is best. But lets just say there were 1000 members who could donate a dollar, but don't have a checking account or parents who will let them do it online, they might think, "how big of a risk is it to mail a dollar? If I lose it, so what?" That is $1000 that could win this auction. In the US, I think it would only take 3-5 days, snail mail to most places.
What would happen about foreign currencies? Because I'd give money but my cash would be useless in the US.
Aren't there currency exchange centers thre? Plus it would take such a long time to get to the U.S., if you didn't send it Express.
I like six six seven forum too.
Here's the thing (or several things)

1. All of the commited members could donate a lot of money. 2. True, going solo is pretty much better, but think about how many people will be happy if we do win, and possibly we might get more members. 3. That sounds good. 4. Gigi, you and other mods could probably dicuss this in one of your "secret threads" and then make a poll containing the best names. Then members could vote on the best one.
Amber - if you really want to send cash, I'm sure there's a currency exchange center near you. However, the best thing is to do it online.
Oh, and I'm not a big fan of "sixsixsevenforum." It's too long, and plus, 667 has already been used in the series. That's where we got it from... Something completely random that only people here would get would be a lot better. If we could think of something...

What about Dante's anagram of SixSixSevenForum, "Miniver Sussex Fox"? It sounds like a real person's name (weird, but real), and it refers to all of us without being a repetition of 667. It also sounds like a name that Handler would enjoy using.
