I just need to correct something there. Vibratto is just a way of singing; he just used it for the story, I believe. "Tagliatelle Grande" is more proof of an obsession for ITaLy.

I like Italy (even though I've never been or anything) but I want to go....someday.
Anyhow, I think Handler is probably much more obsessed with France.
Esme as mentioned is a French name, as is her first name, Gigi. And it was said that Bauldelaire is French, which is true, it comes from Charles Baulderlaire, who was a French writer. Also, Isadora Duncan was a dancer (born in San Fran Sisco, ironically) and lived in Paris. Tragedy followed (her children were drowned, and she herself got her long red scarf attached to the rear wheel spokes of a car in Paris and was instantly killed). Count Olaf, too is based on Count Olaf Labinski from a French play. And in the Carnivorous Carnival, Hugo and Colette comes from Colette and Victor Hugo, both famous French writers. Everyone probably knows all of this already, but it's worth stating that he uses a good amount of French references in his works. But then again, Handler uses a lot of references of everything in his works, be it the Japanese, German, Italian, or Indian.

Perhapse he is obsessed with every culture and every writer and every time period. That would clear up everyones thoughts on where it takes place, when it takes place, and.....why he uses other writers in his books. But then all of the fun of discussing these things would be lost.

I know that a lot of you must be thinking that the picture one page one of this thread looks nothing like the foul fountain.....but if you look to the right of foul fountain in the book, there is a crow on the top of the building and it almost looks like it.
