But I think there is a lot of evidence that Mr. Handler is just obsessed with Italy. 1) When i was in Italy I saw a fountain with a bird on it that could have been the idea for Foul Fountain. 2) Mr. Snicket uses Italian words like Tagliatelle Grande, Vibrato, and Pasta Puttanesca, and many many others. 3) His Favorite book is "The Bear's Famous Invation Of Sicily". Sicily is an Italian town. But thats just my theory!

Sicily is not an Italian town. It is a large island off the south of Italy. The Sicilians, while accepting Italian "government", are proudly individual, influenced by Byzantine, Saracen, Norman and Aragonese culture.
Anyone who wants to understand the essence of Sicily should read Lampedusa's "The Leopard", and/or see Luchino Visconti's film of it, which is simply magnificent, and features the dazzling, frighteningly beautiful Claudia Cardinale.

1. There are most likely dozens of such statues scattered around the world. It is most likely a coincidence.
3. Ennui already cleared this up
2. Lemony also uses french words just as much, if not more. For instance: Cul de sac, Trout: In France their out, Versaille Post Office, not to mention the french names: Jacques, Esmé and Baudelaire.
Note: Just because Handler uses several small references to italy, doesn't mean he loves it. If he loves italy because of that, it must mean that he loves X 10 the english language, since the books are written in english.

On the other hand, I wouldn't be surprised if he did love Italy. I mean, who doesn't?

Me. I like Italy, but I don't like-like Italy. Not anymore, anyway. Italy told me that it's so over you, by the way.

This is a really interesting conversation! I'm Italian, so I do like Italy a lot. But its nice to hear what others have to say, unless its negatory towards anything.

Italy contains the most beautiful city in the world, Venice.
The greatest artists.
The nicest people.
The most gorgeous women.
A fascinating history.
And delicious food...
But Scotland still has the slight edge for me. So cold and rocky and depressing and Celtic.

PJ...I don't mean to be insulting...but does Switzerland really possess an artist of the calibre of, say, Raphael? Or a beauty of the calibre of, say, Monica Belucci? (Ahem...difficult to find a picture of her with clothes on)

Ye, I know. It doesn't have much history either, since the last war we fought was roughly 300 years ago. We only ever fought two. But the women and the food is nice. And the view. Not to mention the snow. But the weather is usually .... um... bad. And we have banks... Meh, i'm done showing off my country. Let's speak of something else.
