Yes! The mother could be: Esmé/Beatrice/K/White Faced Woman 1/White Faced Woman 2/Justice Strauss. This part has also confused me. It's either a hint or a red herring, like everything else in the UA

Gees that would be scary if Olaf had a son. What would he be like? Having to deal with an arsonist/murderer as a father would be tough.

In my copy of Brothers Grimm, The Three Languages takes place in Switzerland. It mentions bird language, dog language, and frog language. Lemony Snicket changed "frog" to "cricket". I'm not sure why, but crickets are important. The three professors are VFDers, and I think the bird language has something to do with carrier crows. Dogs, particualarly dalmations, are the traditional allies of fire departments. There's one in The Bad Beginning's first picture. And crickets, not frogs, are taught to speak in code. I wonder if Prufrock is related to this somehow. Do they teach Cricket-Speak 101?

Good observations Tocuna, I read the real "Three Languages" too. Crickets are inportant somehow but who knows?
Professors-Monty? Nero? (principals could be professors) Sebald (Drs. are professors)

Dr.Isaac Anwhistle? C.M. Kornluth? (He's an instructor, that's kind of like a professor.) Mrs. Bass? Mr. Remora?
It could mean a different count, though.
Wait a minute, if there are counts and duchesses in the story, then that means the series takes place in Europe because no other continent gives people those titles, or am I wrong?

In the UA it mentions that the crickets can carry secret messages just like one of the V.F.D.'s snakes. In all the clippings towards the end, you see there is the snake part, then furthur along we reach a Charlotte's Web excert that has the crickets relaying a message about disguised enemies starting fires. Crickets...

Maybe the Old Count in the story is Olaf's father and Olaf is the son. This could be evidence that Olaf has had some formal VFD training. When his father sent him to study with the professors, at least one of them at Prufrock, Olaf got recruited and VFD-tutored. This also explains why the "Old Count" is listed as an ally of Olaf on Lemony's list.
