Iwas going over the index graph in the LSUA, and Lassez Faire Philosphy is linked to a lot. Well...? That's French (although its laissez, with an I)....It is actually a book put out by the "Laissez-Faire Books Company"-translates out to "to let do...(philosophy). Its kinda confusing, but I guess lots of ASOUE stuff is.

It would make sense to associate Jerome Squalor with Laissez Faire just because he lets everything drop (ie: "I don't want to argue")... But then again, I know very little about it and can't make any sense of the rest of the people it's linked too.
As for the rest of it: what a confusing index! I know it's meant to be, but there are some links I just can't make any sense of... I guess they're hints for later on in the books. I don't have my book with me, now, so I'm doing little good.

Hm...I think I get it...maybe MM is a VFD bank, and PP is a VFD school and VFD has no association with the government...but what about the others? Hm...

J Thinks and Rambles Out Loud About...:
I'm trying to find things about: Zygology Zygosity
Also T is O who is assumably Olaf. What T's do I know? I'll think later...
Also: Anagrams: Rhaldeen, Linda Pukalie, Lena Sinoit-Pecer, Shirley T. Where did I here the names before? Nay, DID I hear these names before? Who were they if I did? Or, were there identities even revealed? Linda and Lena are NOT Olaf.

I always got the impression that laissez faire pretty much means to leave alone. In economics this means you allow overseas trade (and, to a lesser extent, domestic) to happen as it will without any restriction to protect your own merchants and manufacturers, since due to laws like supply and demand and rules of competition, people will always buy the cheapest and highest quality products they can find, therefore merchants will try to outdo eachother with cheapness and high quality so that prices will stay down without any government interference, as referenced in a book by some scottsman during the enlightenment who's name I can't remember. In life laissez faire "to let alone" would imply that none of these people should interfere in the lives of the orphans when they should, say Lemony stepping up from behind the hedges to help the orphans. To be involved in the story instead of just a chronicler. Maybe for the VFD to come forward and kidnap the Baudelaires instead of allowing them to go through one misfortune after another in their quest to find the VFD.

Wow, Pester.
I don't know if this is on topic or pertinent, but
TBB: Lemony, while listing odd laws in various places, mentions a place where all bakers must keep their bread the same price as an other.

Pauline Kael was a movie reviewer for many years for such publications as the New Yorker magazine. One book of her collected columns was entitled " I Lost It at the Movies: Film Writings 1954-1965".
