iin the index, when you look up codes, you're lead through about 9 or 10 words until it finally leads you to the page right before the index that looks like a whole has been burned in it and u see different letters....one of my hobbies is anagrams so for a few weeks, I worked specifically on decoding it in all of my free time and what I got was something along these lines (I don't have my commonplace book with me at the moment): Olaf and Esme have captured Duncan, Isadora, Quigley, Hector, and the Baudelaires. We cannot fight them. Please send help." thats what I got...can anyone else figure out any other possiblities? the one thing about anagrams is that they're not a consistent way of communicating as you can get many messages out of one word (ie olaf can be loaf) so idk if its supposed to mean anything or not...or maybe the idea is right bt the message is wrong? I have NOOO idea...so ya...

Do you mean the portion of the index visble through the "hole" on p. 211? There aren't many letters to work with there. In particular, there are no Q's, so you couldn't spell Quigley or Quagmire. I think you are pulling our legs.

I think so too...as the words you are working with are 'codes, noble causes, necessary evils, moral uncertainty, villainy, conspiracies, overall feeling of doom, and doom overall feeling of '
Though many letters are involved that many anagrams could be made...the letter Q for Quigly does not exist in this list.

Personally, I think there is some significance to that order of words, but anagrams isn't it. They represent how noble causes lead to necessary evils, which lead to the uncertainty of what really qualifies as a noble cause, which leads to villainy and conspiracies, and possibly to the schism.

I'm looking through the "hole in the page" right now, and there aren't any Q's. There are a lot of B's, because the hole opens to the first page of the index. I don't think you could make a sensible anagram out of those words. For there to be an anagram, Handler would have to plan things very, very carefully.

Speaking of planning things carefully, he's good at writing Sebald Code. ^_^
