I got this from someone at the movie site
Is it any shock that Daniel Handler's books, "A Series of Unfortunate Events," went through exactly that in getting it to screen? But after arduous development process & a director swap(Silberling replaced Sonnenfield) the Paramount/Dreamworks has hit a lucky streak Based on the 1st 3 books in Handler's set of novellas about a trio of orphans who dodge ill fortune-& the evil count Olaf- at every turn, Silberling's movie is schedueled to wrap in May and is set for a December release. "We're working with a lot of kids, including infants," says Silberling with a smile. "Thank God that we have 2 ultraprofessional actors." Of course, if your movie featured Meryl Streep (Aunt Josphine) and Jim Carrey (Count Olaf), you'd be counting your lucky stars too. -article in EW by Dan Fierman ;D

Yeah, see. I have been saying for a while now that with all of the great actors they have, even they know that people who have never even heard of the books will go to see the movie because of those actors.
