Personally, I'd like Klaus Badelt all the way. He's done Pirates of the Caribbean and got the mood right on, and The Time Machine is another score he did which got 10/10 or close for most reviewers/ And yet again, the mood for the movie was PERFECT. He can really adapt himself.
John Williams... well, he's ok. But it seems to me from listening to some E.T, Harry Potter among his most notable scores, that he merely does variations of E.T. So...
Thomas Newman... I'll need to listen to some stuff.

Has no one mentioned Danny Elfman? He's great! He's done music for a whole bunch of Tim Burton movies, and The Simpsons, and some other GREAT stuff.
Now, I love the Magnetic Fields, but I don't think Stephin Merrit would be the kind of guy to come up with a soundtrack... he seems like more of a band person. But I definitely couldn't be opposed to seeing a couple Gothic Archies tracks.
I'm a big John Williams fan, too, BUT I think he's too main-stream melodic type thing. I doubt he could get a good gothicish score to go with the movie. The atmosphere for the type of stuff John Williams writes seems too un-Snicket.
I'm not familiar with Thomas Newman OR Klaus Badelt... So I can't really say anything about that.

Thomas Newman is doing the soundtrack. It's a done deal, just check imdb.com (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0002353/). I'm not a huge fan of his work, but mostly because I'm not a huge fan of the films he's worked on. His scores are somewhat generic in my opinion, but he is fairly versatile as a composer and it wouldn't surprise me if he adopts an Elfman-like tone for this film.
Speaking of Danny Elfman, to be honest, I'm getting frightfully tired of his name attached to quirky-spooky-dark-- shall we say Burton-esque-- films. It's become a cliche. I'm ready to hear someone else's take on the genre.
Finally, regarding Stephin Merritt, he's done two film soundtracks: Eban & Charley and Pieces of April. Granted, neither one was a traditional score (Pieces of April being largely a collection of songs from his various projects).

Speaking of Danny Elfman, to be honest, I'm getting frightfully tired of his name attached to quirky-spooky-dark-- shall we say Burton-esque-- films. It's become a cliche. I'm ready to hear someone else's take on the genre. Cliche? Absolutely. But still, he does it so darn well . . . he does plenty of movies other than q-s-d, but there is where he really shines. (I was happy to see on IMDB that he's slated to do the music for a new version of Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory with Johnny Depp as WW.)LOL. On a hunch, I did some easy research and found out I was right. Thomas Newman is Randy Newman's cousin. In fact, it's a very musical family. IMDB says that Thomas is "Son of composer Alfred Newman; nephew of Lionel Newman and Emil Newman; cousin of Randy Newman; brother of composer David Newman, Maria Newman; cousin of composer Joey Newman."

(I was happy to see on IMDB that he's slated to do the music for a new version of Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory with Johnny Depp as WW.)He may shine, but it's a singular brilliance. There's no variety in his themes for that genre. Beetlejuice sounds like Pee Wee's Big Adventure sounds like NBX, and will probably sound like Willy Wonka, world without end. Let me paraphrase: dumdumdumdumdumdum percusussion followed by ahhh-ahhhhhhhh, ahhh-ahhhhhhhh choir singing slightly off-key. Rinse and repeat. He has it down to a science, but I'm tired of it and I feel that it has gotten to the point of hurting films. Of course, I'd be wrong in that assumption, because if there's one thing I've learned over the years, it's that people LOVE the familiar. I'm sure it works wonderfully for marketing people; those sounds can charm a certain demographic out of their black-wallpapered bedrooms like the Pied Piper. *shrug*
