Well I agree kinda, but don't kinda. I mean, some foreigners are nice, some aren't... it has nothing to do with their culture

Meet one on one, induvidually, and I am sure the Hispanics in my town would be perfectly nice people... But the ones that are already think they are the boss pressure the new ones, or the newbies are not in with the group...

So you really use the term 'wetback' I thought it wasn't important. I mean in Mexcio, and mostly at the north where I'm from, we joke w/that 'term'. I've been a 'wetback' when I was younger. I read about it in one article about Mexicans moving to the US and how 'wetback' is almost like 'the N word' for hispanics. Is it that bad?

In Mexico we use 'wetback' just to mean to illegaly pass and live in the US, wether it's w/false document or w/o documents. I can't believe the hypocresy of these people, in the article I read it said that they feel insulted even if they're indeed a 'wetback'. Well, I guess that now I know that I shouldn't call them that.

Yeah, I guess it is somewhat bad and I understand it is a term used for illegal aliens but it is also kind-of used as "mexican trash", you know? Like there is a lot of prejudice just inside the Hispanic culture. The whole I'm not a Mexican, I'm Spanish.. or the I'm not like a "Mexican" my family has been here for generations type deal. Anyways, my sister has a friend named Rebecca who is Mexican and she always claims to be Spanish. Then my sister tells these stories of how Rebecca seems ashamed of her Mexican heritage.. so I asked her one day if Rebecca was really Mexican or Spanish. My sister explained that Rebecca was really Mexican and somehow it came up just because Rebecca is a Mexican doesn't mean her family just came to this country. I said yeah I didn't think of Rebecca as a wetback. My sister acted totally floored, and said how could I say such a thing blah blah. I said I didn't think of her as just coming to this country or as a poor Mexican stereotype. I did say it did seem like Rebecca seemed prejudice against other Mexicans and the culture in genral. Anyways, subject dropped and two weeks later my sister brings it up again saying I didn't know the real meaning of the word "wetback" and that I sounded uneduated when I used that word. My sister is extremely judgemental I know the forum thinks I am, and also thinks I'm really pushy with my opinions but my sister is like ten times worse than I am.. so she lectures me about how uneducated I am and she said that I am more of a wetback than Rebecca. I was so freaking pissed off. My sister uses terms like white trash to describe the "uneducated white people".. and yet somehow I sound uneducated to use the term wetback? Plus it was in private I would never use the term in front of people. Anyways, I'm still pissed off because my sister said I was more of a wetback than Rebecca. It's a sad occurance...but I think there are a certain segment of each race that embody the negative names attributed to all by some boisterous individuals... for example...there are white trash, but this doesn't embody all white folks...but let's face facts...some people are deplorable and they embody the harsh names exactly. a spade is a spade as they say.

So what's the 'american' definition of wetback?

Yes, I know that wetback comes from crossing the river swimming. But you said that you used one definition and your sister told you you were uneducated, and then used the word. So I was wondering which definition was the right one. But it seems that both are used right? to pass illegally to the US and to be 'Mexican Trash'. BTW, I was reading another article -in spanish- about a professor from Harvard saying that hispanics, and specially Mexicans, represent a threat to the 'beautiful and great American way of life' becuase they don't want to get used to the American culture and don't leave their language and cultural background. This guy said that he was really angry when he called to a bank and the receptionist asked him wether he would like to be assisted in English or Spanish, and he replied yelling that he is in his country America and the less he would expected is to be assisted in his own language. I don't know what you think but in my opinion this guy is overreacting, Mexicans and Hispanics in general really help America. I don't know much about this, but in Mexico is well known that hispanics do the 'dirty jobs' that the big part of Americans don't want to do. Also, many hispanics are learning English and aren't sticking to their own language as this professor says.

I think people should leave Mexicans alone. Instead of moaning at them for moving to the U.S, why don't they moan at people who live there and cause disruption?
Oh, and this Rebecca person shouldn't be ashamed of where's she's from. My mum always said to me, "Those who are afraid to show their own culture are the weakest people ever."
So that is why if anyone asks me where I'm from, I wouldn't say 'England' just to be like my friends. No, I would say I'm half Russian and half Persian, because that is the truth.

I have never even heard the word wetback used up here... Where I live, the "N" word for Hispanics (No one freak out, I am just telling you) is... s... sp... SPIC! There, I said it! Fwoo... Omg, I have trouble saying that word... In my town, if you say that, you'd better have a metal plate in your head, to protect the bullet...
