You mean Orphans, right? People have been writing about orphans for years, centuries even. Just think about Charles Dickens(no doubt an inspiration to Lemony) As for Spiderwick and Awful End, I think those were inspired by Snicket, by his writing style. They were also inspired by the design and general feel of Snicket's books.

OMG, Oprah is everywhere now... I'm just so sick of her. Although I liked her in "The Color Purple".

Lemony definitely wasn't the first to use orphans... What about Harry Potter?

like The Name of the Game is Murder. Oooh, I liked that book. Freaky, though. My friend read that book, she said it was really good. I was gonna borrow it from her, but I'm re-reading ASOUE....I'll probably have to re-re-read it again close to September, when book 11, gets out. I'm pre-ordering it. ;D

Orphans are handy in books. Authors don't have to worry about parents unless they're going for the whole mysterious past thing, in which case it makes it easier and more interesting. Nice tool to have in your utility belt. You can go for the "poor orphans struggle against the harsh conditions of modern life", or the "poor orphans try to find their families and are happy reunited", or the "poor orphans are thrust from home to home and must hold on to the only shreds of the lives they once knew" or the "orphans must combat evil villains to save their long lost uncle" or the "orphans come in briefly to heighten the tragedy and set the atmosphere for death, then die themselves and the real main characters feel sad" or the.... I got nothing. But the possibilities are endless! Orphans are definitely not a new idea.
Oprahs, however...
