cut and pasted from my livejournal:
"Today I wrote something for the testing stuff I had to do for NCCS. I do not remember the exact wording, but it went something like this:
The events about which we are the most frightened often do not come to pass. [this was the topic sentence I chose] In the 1950's and 60's, when my dad was growing up, the United States of America lived in an acutely paranoid unease. Bomb shelters were made. Schoolchildren were taught to sit under their desks with their arms over their heads during routine drills. "I'm not sure what good that would have done us if some trigger-happy jet pilot decided to drop the Big One on us," my dad has told me several times, laughing, "Looking back, I can see it was really more of a psychological thing- a feeble stab at giving the youth of the nation a false sense of security while their parents were busy stockpiling canned goods." Today, the US still stands, so to speak. It is not a barren wasteland glowing with radiation. Its inhabitants have not mutated on any physical level. It is worth noting that, in contrast to this wide-eyed, calm sort of mass hysteria, two times a country has been hit hard- Pearl Harbor and 9/11, and two times they never saw it coming.
It's not my best work, and I know I didn't get all the facts straight, but that's cos I had to make it up on the spot with no prior research."

I am finished. The subject could be elaborated on, but I'm going to leave it at that.
