Jerome and Esmé
As we all should know by now Esmé, Olaf’s villainous girlfriend was once married to Jerome Squalor and lived in the penthouse at 667 Dark Avenue at the time when they were the Baudelaire’s guardians. (TEE)
According to the inscribing on the photograph of the grounds at The Vineyard of Fragrant Grapes, Jerome and Esmé were married after only one evening together. (LSUA pg 89) Thus if Esmé had known Count Olaf before the events of TEE, which I believe we can pretty safely assume because of the transcript from the VFD meeting. (LSUA pg 45) In this meeting an O and an E reveal themselves as traitors. There are some that believe that this O is not Count Olaf because he says, “Actually, I prefer to be called T.” As we know Count Olaf was part of VFD and uses many disguises throughout ASOUE and so T could just be one of these. So if Count Olaf did know Esmé before she married Jerome, then it must have been part of one of his schemes to get his hands on the Baudelaire fortune.
We know that Esmé acquired knowledge from Geraldine Julienne who is one of her fans as to where she could accidentally bump into Jerome. (LSUA pg 120) With this knowledge Esmé knowing that Jerome knew the Baudelaires was able to marry Jerome, move in with him and adopt the Baudelaires as part of Count Olaf’s plan.
We also know that Jacques was friends with Jerome as well as knowing that Esmé was an evil woman as he writes a letter in response to Jerome’s Wedding Invitation (LSUA pg 122) supporting the claim that Esmé was part of VFD and on the same side of the schism as Olaf. In this letter it goes on to say that Jacques is part of a secret organisation that has recently experienced a schism, presumably VFD, in which a member known as O behaved in a greedy and violent manner which split the organisation into two arguing groups. It also says that O currently prefers to be called S. If we look through the books in the lead up to TEE we can see that Count Olaf uses a number of ‘S’ disguises…

I hope to figure out which disguise Count Olaf was under at the time f Jerome and Esmĕ’s wedding so as to work out the whereabouts of the Baudelaires at this time.
Towards the end of the letter Jacques describes a deadly accident at Lucky Smells Lumbermill that was solved by a detective claiming to have spilled coffee on his jacket. There is an article describing the murder at Lucky Smells Lumbermill investigated by a volunteer, presumably Jacques, which concludes that Count Olaf was responsible. In his letter to Jerome Jacques says that he arrived at the scene first. Then in the article describing the accident at Lucky Smells Lumbermill (LSUS pg 118) a detective says that he spilled coffee on his jacket, Jacques also mentions this in his letter to Jerome so I believe it is safe to say that Jacques was at Luckysmells just after the Baudelaires or perhaps even at the same time.
It is relatively safe to come to the conclusion that the accident Jacques describes was Dr Orwell which means at the time he wrote the letter Count Olaf could not have been disguised as Stephano or Captain Sham because he had already moved onto his Shirley disguise at the time of the events of TMM and so it is safe for me to conclude that the ‘S’ Jacques refers to must in fact be Shirley meaning that Esmé and Jerome met and were married in between the end of TMM and the beginning of TEE. Thus they were only married for about half a semester (TMM Letter to Editor) while the Baudelaires were at Prufrock Prep. This means that Olaf had already planned to have the children live at 667 Dark Avenue before he had kidnapped the Quagmires and perhaps he had planned to hide the Baudelaires in something at the IN Auction instead of the Quagmires or perhaps he knew about the floor above the penthouse and its importance to VFD.

Once again I would like to thank PJ for his involvement.
