Family Tree
Something in the family tree (see page 196-197 in the UA) recently caught my eye.
The branch that leads to L, J and K starts from a branch called E.
Lemony’s father is called Jacob (see page 11 of the UA).
And, since the father of E is Chas (a.k.a Charles) Snicket, it is logical that Charles’ offspring also have the same last name as their father. And since Jacob doesn’t start with an E… the way I see it, there are only three ways of explaining this.
1) E is the mother of the Lemony and for some reason E and her children all kept Snicket as their last name, rather than E’s husband’s last name. Perhaps Snicket is a respected name than that of Jacob, and E and her children wanted to keep it. Perhaps Jake is an orphan with no last name so they where forced to keep their mothers name. Perhaps the Snickets where born in some odd country, where keeping the name of the mother is traditional, or perhaps it just sounded better.
2) E is not the mother of Lemony, but rather, this is not a Family Tree, but a VFD member tree. Charles Snicket had three apprentices, and these three had a further three. This would explain why the tree always splits into three. The words Family Tree that are written in the bottom right corner could be ironic, or incorrect somehow.
3) The Snicket children are adopted, and have kept their original name. Although it says in the song “The Little Snicket Lad” (see page 11 of the UA) that Jake’s wife (E) was “very pregnant”. But the song is full of mistakes, so this could be one too.
So I must conclude, that either the Family Tree is not a Family Tree, the Snickets kept their mother’s name or their adopted. Personally, I hold the first theory most likely because, why would someone name a VFD Training List a Family Tree? I doubt it is supposed to be funny. Such historic documents rarely are. The third theory IS a possibility, but it is rather unlikely…
Perhaps we shall discover in the remaining two books.
Another theory brought to you by PJ productions.
