Dr. Gustav Sebald and the timeline
It is often talked about how the movie, Zombies in the Snow (which was directed by Gustav Sebald), contains a hidden message in the Sebald Code for Dr. Montgomery. The message is:
Attention! Hidden in the snowman is a survivor of the fire. Meet us in the town where this film takes place. Bring the three children. Your new assistant is not one of us. Beware.
This film watched by Monty and the children the night before Monty’s death, and Monty’s former assistant, Gustav (who may or may not be Dr. Gustav Sebald), had sent in his resignation a week before. So Gustav Sebald could only have known about Olaf being Monty’s new assistant for at least a week. And Lemony describes the film a “fine film”. No “fine film” can be filmed within a week. So I have come to the only logical conclusion at hand:
The film was already finished long before Monty’s assistant died, and the extra scene with the Sebald Code in it was only filmed afterwards. This would also explain why on page 71 of the UA we see a picture of Gustav Sebald, a tiny boy, working on the snowman. Gustav Sebald is, when the film starts being made, Gustav is a tiny boy, yet when it is finally released, he is a grown man. Sally Sebald also mentions a young actor, who plays Rölf, whose name escapes her. Omar, perhaps? In the books, Olaf is often confused with Omar, so it could be that Olaf himself was working on the film when he was young too. Perhaps both Olaf and Gustav where working on the film for VFD.
So, in conclusion, the only way for this whole business to be chronologically correct would be if the films where already filmed, save one scene, ages ago.
