Sorry, I went to post ages ago, and then deleted the whole thing by accident. I was so annoyed that I just left it. Heh heh... Elle, I'm very sorry if I offended you. I meant that for Lemony it was lame. For you, it was fascinating. ***
Esme passed out a round of hi-fives to the group victoriously as Geraldine stalked away. Even Jerome hi-fived her, still half-unsure of why Esme hated Geraldine, and Kit hi-fived Esme, forcefully grinning. "It's okay," Lemony assured his sister, reaching across the table and putting his hand on her's. Kit laughed loudly. "What?" Lemony asked. "What's so funny?" "Your sleeve," Kit giggled, indicating to the end of Lemony's jacket. It had joined Geraldine's microphone, floating in Beatrice's soup. The group fired up again, laughing uncontrollably, not thinking about the fact that Kit would soon be gone from their midst. Would she still remain friends with them? For the moment, she, Beatrice and Esme were inseparable, but perhaps the future would prove that nothing lasts forever. Dewey stared at the group from the hall, still distraught from his argument with Kit. It looked like the end of their relationship, but Dewey was in denial. He and Kit were meant to be. They were perfect for each other. So what if they were only in high school? Dewey had already thought of how he would propose to Kit, and he knew for a fact that Kit had already designed her wedding dress. It was just written in stone that they would marry. Back at the table, Kit wiped her eyes and sighed. "Maybe I should see Simon," she said. "Who knows? He could provide evidence assuring the doctor that I'm fine." "Give it a go," Lemony said, "and don't give up on Dewey. He was only trying to help." Beatrice and Esme both exploded with reminders that Kit and Dewey were made for each other. Kit grinned and silenced them. "Okay," she said decidedly. "I apologise to Dewey. I meet with Simon. And we all live happily ever after." The table cheered. Dewey blinked back tears, not knowing what was happening. Had Kit moved on? Was Dewey officially an ex? "Hello," came a voice from behind Dewey. Dewey was used to the familiarity of thinking he was looking into a mirror whenever he spoke to one of his identical brothers, but the appearance of Ernest still took him by surprise. "My poor brother, heart-broken. Tell me you're heart broken." "I'm not," Dewey insisted. "What do you want?" he asked, scowling. Ernest clicked his tongue. "Why do I always have to want something?" he asked. " What do you want?" "To make a bet." Dewey sighed. "Hit me," he said wearily. "What have I got to lose?" Ernest's eyes flickered, satisfied. "Kit and Dewey have moved on. Have they really? Prove it to me. I need some kind of evidence, here." He grinned. "So get Kit and Bertrand to go out."

That's fine, May. Take as much time as you need to post. *** “Look,” Esmé said, and pointed one long-nailed finger across the cafeteria at the door. “It’s Ernest.” “Esmé, don’t point,” Beatrice scolded softly. “It isn’t polite.” “Neither is Ernest.” “What do you have against Dewey’s brother?” Jerome asked. Esmé shrugged. “Nothing. He just used to pick on me in middle school.” “Why did he pick on you?” Esmé turned to Beatrice for support. “There was a nickname people used to have for Esmé,” Beatrice explained. “One that Ernest came up with.” Jerome nodded. “What was it?” inquired Jerome, looking directly at Esmé. Biting down a little on her bottom lip, she replied, “Eggs.” Lemony snorted, and Esmé sent him a furious glare. After that, he immediately shut up. “Why did they call you that?” said Jerome. “Because that’s what my initials spell out,” Esmé explained. “Esmé Gigi Genevieve Salinger. Within a month Ernest had gotten the entire school to call me that, and it continued for two years. He’ll still call me that on occasion.” “I think it’s cute.” “Well, don’t you start calling me that.” “I won’t,” Jerome promised. “Just as long as you don’t call me ‘Jerry’.” Esmé smiled. “You don’t happen to have a nemesis named Tom,” she asked, “do you?” Jerome shook his head just as Dewey and Ernest shuffled over to the table. Dewey looked nervous, while Ernest displayed a smug grin on his face. Esmé scowled at him. “How’s it going, Eggs?” he asked. “Get lost,” Esmé said. Beatrice did her best to keep things calm. “Hello, Ernest,” she said. “How are you? We haven’t seen you around school in a while.” “I’m well,” Ernest said. He turned his attention to Kit. “Dewey told me about what happened. It’s really a shame you’re being forced to switch schools. Although I suppose it really is for the best, considering your condition.” “Was the only reason you came over here to cause trouble?” Esmé demanded angrily. Jerome sensed an argument was going to break out, and so he did the only thing he could. He slid out of his chair and joined Jacques underneath the table. “Hey,” Jerome said. “Would you mind if I hide out here with you for a while?”

That has got to be the funniest thing you've ever posted, Emma. (Jerome joining Jacques under the table.) Poor Jerome! *** "Sure," Jacques breathed, shuddering as he stared at Ernest's legs. "What jerk," he muttered. He turned to Jerome and whispered, "What Esme told you was putting it mildly. Ernest didn't just make up a cruel nickname- he ruins people's lives. He spreads mean rumors, places bets with people, intimidates younger students, and new students, for that matter." Jerome's eyes widened. "Don't worry," Jacques said. "The one person who freaks him out is Lemony. He's never done anything horrible to Lemony once. I don't know why, though." Up above the table, Ernest was in a heated argument with Esme and Beatrice over Esme's nickname. Kit and Dewey were yelling at each other furiously, Bertrand hastily trying to beak them up. Lemony stood up, and roared over the top of them, "SHUT UP!" Dewey sank down into Kit's seat, and Kit perched herself on his lap. Beatrice and Esme folded the arms, scolding. Bertrand, relieved, wiped his brow and went to sit down, but missed the chair completely. Ernest laughed haughtily and walked away. "Sorry," Lemony said, sighing. His eyes flickered towards Beatrice, wondering if she was frightened by him, but on the contrary, she looked quite proud. Jerome and Jacques clambered out from their hiding spots, relieved that Ernest was gone. "Who wants coffee?" Dewey asked, standing Kit up and walking over to the cafeteria's espresso machine. The entire group raised their hands, with the exception of Esme, who was glaring at Lemony, and Jerome, who said meekly that he didn't need it. "You're a strong man," Dewey said deeply. "I'll see Simon tomorrow, if you want," Kit said quietly, as Dewey placed a milky cup of coffee in front on her. "Are you sure?" Dewey asked. Beatrice and Esme both turned to face him, shooting him looks of, "Don't clarify, or she'll change her mind". Dewey nodded to them, and said to Kit, "Great."

Thanks, May. I was laughing the entire time I was reading your post. ;D The part where Bertrand missed the chair and fell on his butt was the absolute best! *** Jerome decided to make one last attempt to get Esmé to get something in her stomach. “If you want,” he said, “I’d be happy to go get you a hot chocolate. I was thinking of getting one myself, seeing as coffee tends to make me nervous. I remember you told me earlier that you don’t particularly care for it, either.” Esmé smiled. “That’s very sweet of you,” she said. “There’s a vending machine down the hall that sells hot chocolate. Would you like me to show you where it is?” Jerome nodded. “Where are you two off to?” Bertrand asked as Jerome and Esmé rose from the table. “We’re just going to get some hot chocolate,” Jerome informed Bertrand. “We’re coming right back.” “Hurry back,” Beatrice said. “The bell will be ringing soon.” “Don’t worry,” Esmé assured her friend. “We won’t be more than five minutes.” Lacing her arm through Jerome’s, Esmé led him out of the cafeteria. They had just begun to walk down the hallway when Esmé began to feel strangely. She pressed the palm of her hand against her forehead. “Jerome,” she said. “I think I… I feel sort of…” She stumbled forward, and Jerome wrapped his arms around her waist before she could fall. “Woe,” he said, hoisting her back up onto her feet. He then led her over to a bench and helped her to sit down. “Are you okay?” “I’m fine. I just started to feel dizzy all of a sudden.” Jerome knelt down and placed his hands on Esmé’s knees as he gazed up into her face. “I don’t want to argue with you, but I think I know the cause of your dizzy spell.” “Well, I don’t have what Kit does if that’s what you mean,” Esmé replied. “So you can rule out that notion.” “I know you don’t,” Jerome said. “I just think that you should eat more. You hardly touched your dinner last night, and you only had two pieces of toast for breakfast this morning.” “I have a headache.” “You wait right here. I’m sure I can find the vending machine myself. You just relax, and I’ll be right back.” Before Esmé could argue, Jerome kissed her on the cheek and then hurried off in the direction of the vending machine.

Merce, Emma! I'm glad you enjoyed it! *** "Esme!" Kit cried, appearing from nowhere and joining her friend's side. "What happened?" Esme groaned, and Kit held her hand. She sat quietly, making sure that Esme remained conscious. She assumed that Jerome was finding help of some description. Sure enough, he returned, his arms filled with chip packets and chocolate bars. He and Kit instantly began to force-feed Esme, Jerome explaining what had happened. "She should eat more," Kit said sternly, cramming an Aero Bar into Esme's mouth. Esme swallowed feebly. Her eyes twitched, and fell shut. Jerome cried out in anguish. "It's okay," Kit told him. She turned to face Esme, and yelled loudly, "Half-priced shoes!" Esme sat bolt upright. Kit grinned satisfactorily, Jerome laughed in relief, and Esme's face relaxed as she saw them. "It's what we do to wake her up in the mornings," Kit told Jerome happily. She stroked Esme's face, sighing. "I'll go tell the others what happened," she said, pulling herself up and hurrying away. She reached the group instantly, and gave them an explanation in one breath. "That girl needs to eat more," Jacques said, shaking his head in disgust. "What's her problem, anyway? Is she anorexic?" "And you say that I don't know when to stop," Lemony scolded. He turned to Kit. "Aren't you even a little upset that she stole your technique? Of fainting, then getting a guy to catch you?" Kit laughed. "Not remotely," she said. "Besides, it was purely chance that Bertrand caught me." "You should go out with Bertrand," Dewey said suddenly. The whole group turned and stared at him, and he stood up. "I think I need to see the nurse," he said in a robotic voice. As he walked away stiffly, he called out, "You'd make a great couple!" Kit put her hands on her hips. "Did he just dump me?" she asked in disbelief. Bertrand stood up, smiled at Kit, and sprinted after Dewey. "He didn't," the remaining members of the group said simultaneously. Kit shook her head and sat down on the table. Jerome and Esme approached them, Esme leaning on Jerome for support. They greeted everyone, and Jerome seated Esme gently, before hurrying to get food. He brought back a milkshake, doughnut, a burger and french fries. Jacques and Lemony rolled their eyes, knowing full well that Esme would not even breathe near the plate, and even Kit and Beatrice exchanged doubtful glances. But to the shock of everybody, Esme thanked Jerome, and ate every bite. "Are you dying?" Jacques asked, before he could stop himself.

*Jerome voice* You’re very welcome, May. I loved this last one, too. Kit’s “half-priced shoes” line was the best! *** Esmé was about to retort back with a comment about Jacques’ single eyebrow when the bell interrupted her. “You should take the remainder of the day and rest,” Beatrice advised Esmé. “Kit and I will get the assignments for you.” Jerome turned to Esmé, his cheeks having gone a shade pinker. “If you don’t mind,” he said, “I’d feel more at ease if you allowed me to walk you back to your dorm.” Esmé nodded. “That’s very kind of you,” she said. “I’d like that.” The group exited the cafeteria together and bid farewell outside. “She’ll complain about being bored,” Beatrice called after Esmé and Jerome as they headed for the dormitory, “and not want to stay in bed. Whatever you do, Jerome, don’t give in!” Chuckling, Beatrice turned back to Kit, Lemony, and Jacques. “What did Dewey mean when he said that you should date Bertrand? Dewey had to have been joking when he said that— right?” Kit shrugged, while Lemony and Jacques looked equally confused. “I suppose we’ll have to ask him later,” said Beatrice. “If we don’t make it to class by the time the next bell rings, then all four of us will be spending the evening in detention.” *** “Esmé, are you sure it’s alright that I come in?” Jerome asked from the doorway. “I mean, the boys aren’t exactly permitted in the girls’ dorms.” “We aren’t going to stay,” Esmé explained, kneeling down in front of the dresser that she shared with Beatrice and Kit. “What do you mean you ‘aren’t going to stay’?” Jerome repeated. “Esmé, you nearly fainted! The only obligation you should be fulfilling is getting right into bed and—” But Esmé didn’t appear to have heard as she yanked open the bottom drawer of the dresser. Lifting away some multi-colored scarves, she found what she was looking for. It was an old Prufrock Prep yearbook from when Esmé, Kit, and Beatrice had been in the eighth grade. Holding up the yearbook, Esmé exclaimed, “Found it!” “What is it?” Jerome asked. He already had one foot through the door, while the other lingered behind hesitantly. “I’ll show you when we get downstairs,” Esmé said, shutting the dresser drawer. “What about your condition?” “Oh, for heaven’s sake, Jerome! We’re only going into the commons room.” Jerome smiled shyly, draping his arm protectively around Esmé as she stepped back through the door. He didn’t let go of her until he saw to it that she was seated comfortably in one of the big armchairs in the commons room. He sat beside her, peering down as she opened the yearbook. “I have a confession to make,” Esmé began as she turned the first few pages. “My name isn’t the only thing that Ernest Denouement has ever teased me about.” “Oh?” Jerome asked. Esmé nodded as she flipped another page, this time to reveal a photograph showing a curvaceous young woman. Jerome’s eyes widened as he tried to distinguish the girl in the photograph from the one seated next to him in the chair. “This is me two years ago,” Esmé explained. “As you can see, I’m quite a bit heavier than I am now.” “I think you look beautiful,” Jerome said. “I— what I mean is… you look every bit as beautiful now as you did then. It’s just that back then you looked a lot healthier.” Esmé smiled slightly, then lowered her eyes to the picture once more. “I wasn’t happy, though. Every time I stepped out of the shower and caught a glimpse of myself in the mirror I would cry. I’m sure I could have handled it if it hadn’t been for Ernest constantly reminding me about it.” “What did he say to you?” Esmé bit her lip, shaking her head. “Any name that you can think of,” she said, “he would call me. I stopped eating my meals in the cafeteria all because he would come over to my table and announce in an overly loud voice everything I had on my tray. Looking back on it, I know I wasn’t fat, nor did I ever overeat. It’s just that Ernest knew exactly which buttons to push, and so he took every opportunity he could get to do it.” “That monster!” Jerome shouted, and Esmé jumped. “Does he have any idea of the seriousness that his careless actions have caused?” “He wouldn’t care,” Esmé said, closing the yearbook and setting it in her lap. She leaned her head on Jerome’s shoulder and closed her eyes. “He’s cruel, and doesn’t care who he hurts.” Jerome wrapped both arms around Esmé, resting his head on hers. He wanted to tell her that he loved her, but thought that it was far too soon to think about making such a bold move. Instead, he kissed her on the forehead and said, “I’ll never let anyone hurt you, Esmé Gigi Genevieve Salinger. Not Ernest Denouement, or anyone else. I promise.”

What did I do, Elle? What did I do?! *** Bertrand approached Kit, telling her that she should speak to Dewey at the next free minute she had. It turned out that she, along with Jacques, Bertrand and Jerome, had photography, while Esme, Beatrice, Lemony and Dewey all had drama. So she would have to wait until French Revoloution to speak to Dewey. Kit, Jacques and Bertrand were talking on the ash-felt, where they had been told to meet, when Jerome hurried up to them. "Hello," Kit said in surprise. "I thought you were with Esme?" Jerome explained that Esme was resting in her dorm, after much conviction towards Jerome that she would be fine. Kit scoffed at this thought, but didn't say anything, knowing that Esme had eaten an enormous lunch. Even if she did sneak off to drama class, she wouldn't pass out again. Besides, Beatrice would look after her. Professor Pertwee was taking the class for photography, and to the group's mild astonishment, he was actually quite passionate. He spoke with such enthusiasm that it was hard not to wear a smile as they snapped away at the open grounds under the greying sky. Kit was naturally a very abstract photographer, taking blurry pictures of people's limbs and empty spaces. At the end of the class, they were to present a single photograph to Pertwee, and Kit chose a stunning one of Jacques and Jerome's silhouettes. They were back to back, their cameras raised upwards, looking like a mirror image (Jerome being slightly larger than Jacques). They were under a tree, and Kit thought that the result of the experimental photograph was brilliant. Professor Pertwee thought so too. "My star student!" He boomed. Unfortunately, the rest of the class heard, and glared at Kit. *** Kit sat next to Dewey in French Revolution, slamming her books down, chilled from standing outside for an hour and a half. "Hey," she muttered. Dewey attempter to smile, but more or less produced a grimace. "Hello," he said, sounding formal. "How are you?" "I've been better," Kit said. "What the hell did you mean, Bertrand and I should date?" "You should," Dewey said, shrugging. "I think it would be nice. Two friends, now dating, maybe one day married..." "Dewey, we're dating." "Really?" Kit was making this so hard for him, why couldn't she just accept the fact that Ernest had threatened to sabotage Kit's life if she didn't date Bertrand? Okay, so maybe she didn't know this, but she should just figure these things out without Dewey having to explain it to her. "Please," Dewey begged. "Just date him. I'm doing this for you." Kit shook her head. "I don't know what your problem is, but-" Dewey interrupted her with his retelling of the bet Ernest had proposed. Dewey had rejected his offer, and that's when Ernest had added in the prospect of Kit's life being ruined. Dewey finished, panting, and looked into Kit's eyes. "See? I was trying to protect you." "Oh, if you were trying to protect me," Kit said, moving her books and changing desks. *** It was astounding, the amount that Esme ate in the next few days. She ploughed her way through the largest amount of food that anyone had seen Esme eat in months, and although everyone was proud of her, only Kit and Beatrice noticed something that made their stomachs churn- she wasn't gaining any weight. Esme rarely exercised, only to move from class to class, so Beatrice and Kit could not figure out what was wrong, unless Esme had some miracle eat-all-you-can diet that she kept to herself. "I seriously don't know what's wrong," Kit said, washing her hands in the basin of the girl's bathroom. Beatrice re-did her ponytail, sighing. "How is she still so skinny? No one can eat that much and still weigh- how much does she weigh? Four kilograms?" Beatrice giggled, and noticed that one of the cubicles was shut, but not fully locked. She opened the door, and gasped. Kit ran over to her friend's shoulder, and nearly fainted. There, at the toilet bowl, sat Esme, frozen as she stared up at her two best friends, her fingers half-way down her throat, guilt visible in her eyes.

Sliding her fingers slowly out of her mouth, Esmé began to spew forth a number of excuses. “I— I— it isn’t what it looks like!” she stammered, tears starting to build in her blue eyes. “I wasn’t feeling well, and I— there was something stuck in my throat, and—” “Oh, Esmé, stop it!” Beatrice snapped. “Save the excuses for someone who’s dumb enough to believe them. We know what you were doing.” Kit and Beatrice watched as Esmé’s bottom lip began to tremble, and two tears rolled down her cheeks. At last, after two years of hiding behind the closed doors of bathrooms and cubicles, her secret had finally been exposed. “Don’t tell Jerome!” Esmé begged, tears running down her cheeks as if they would never stop. “Esmé, how in the world did this happen?” Esmé tried to run, but no sooner had she sprinted through the door of the cubicle than did she fall flat on her face across the cold tiles. Beatrice and Kit gasped, then bent down and helped Esmé to her feet. “We’re taking you to the infirmary,” Beatrice said. Esmé flung herself into the arms of her two best friends, who held her tightly and allowed their own tears to fall along with hers. No one could have suspected that Geraldine Julienne had heard every word from behind the locked door of the cubicle that was closest to the bathroom door. *** Jacques, Jerome, and Bertrand were on their way back from the cafeteria when they inadvertently crossed paths with Geraldine Julienne. Jacques groaned. “Hi, Jacky,” Geraldine said. “What do you want, Geraldine?” Bertrand asked. “Excuse me,” she said. “But was I talking to you?” “No. And I’m thankful for the fact that—” “Sorry, but I’m not interested in anything you have to say.” She turned to Jerome. “Hey, you’re Jacky’s roommate, right? Jerry?” “Yes,” Jerome said. “But I prefer ‘Jerome’. I don’t particularly like being called Jer—” “I have some news for you regarding your girlfriend.” “Esmé?” Geraldine smiled, and both Bertrand and Jacques took notice of the cruelty in her face. It was the sort of look that someone who enjoyed being the bearer of terrible news took on when their only reason was to do just that. And it was terrible news that Geraldine Julienne gave to Jerome Squalor a moment later. “Mm-hm,” she said. “You know all that food she’s been packing away over the last couple of days? Well, she’s been disposing of it in the girl’s bathroom after every meal.” Jerome just stared at Geraldine. “Well?” she demanded, her voice almost angry. “Don’t you know what that means?” Jerome, of course, did. He just didn’t want to admit it. However, he didn’t have to, because it was in the next few moments that Jacques and Bertrand stepped forward in their friend’s defense. “Of course he knows what you mean!” Bertrand shouted. “But you must admit that this has all come as a bit of a shock. Thank you for your overwhelming concern, Geraldine, but Jacques and I can take it from here.” “You’re quite welcome,” Geraldine said, and dashed off. Putting his hand on Jerome’s shoulder, Bertrand asked, “Hey, Jerome? Are you okay?” To the surprise of both Bertrand and Jacques, Jerome started running in the direction of the main building. “Jerome, wait,” Bertrand called. “Where are you going?” Jerome paused, and glanced briefly over his shoulder at his two friends. “To kill Ernest Denouement,” Jerome said, right before he broke into another hurried run.

[Thanks!]
"Oh my God," Kit murmured, looking up from Esme and up at the door. They were sitting in the common room, lecturing Esme for the hundredth time, all sobbing quietly.
Beatrice and Esme looked curiously at Kit in unison. Kit sighed. "I think that Geraldine Julienne just left the bathroom," she said. "And I didn't see her enter."
Esme choked something about her being in there when she went in. She had just assumed that she'd left before Kit and Beatrice and entered.
"Crap," Kit swore, biting her bottom lip. Esme looked up in panic, and Beatrice grimaced.
"We've gotta stop her," Kit yelped, springing from her seat. Esme emitted another sob. Beatrice told Kit that they would stay back until Esme felt a bit better.
"Right on," Kit said, and ran out of the building. She saw Geraldine strutting away from a group of boys, who she recognized as Jerome, Jacques and Betrand. A split second later, Jerome dashed away from the other two boys, who both looked astounded.
"What did she say?' Kit demanded.
Bertrand muttered something about bulimia. Kit cried out in frustration. "Geese! Could my life get any worse?!"
As if on cue, Dewey marched up from behind them, his uncle in tow. "You didn't join us the other day," he said to Kit, "so I thought you and Simon could catch up here."
"No!" Kit yelled. Why was everything going wrong? She turned, and headed for the main building, where Jerome's unsteady figure was still visible. She heard Jacques and Bertrand follow her.
"What are you doing?" she panted when she reached Jerome, which only took her a matter of seconds. Jerome gasped that Ernest was going to hell.
"Nice," Jacques praised, reaching them. Bertrand joined him, sweating.
'Let's do this," Kit said, clambering through the doors. She spotted Ernest instantly. He was talking to Geraldine, wearing a smug and excited expression. Actually, the pair of them were. They'd make a great couple, Kit though vaguely.
"Hi," she said, in a sickly sweet tone. Her smile was overly cordial.
"Ah, hello," Ernest said, facing Kit. "We were just having a little talk about your bulemic friend Esme. Funny, how she can cough up everything she's eaten, and still look like a coal truck, eh?'
Jerome's face turned red. Jacques and Bertrand shook their heads, disgusted. "You're sick," Jacques said. "Do you think it's funny?"
"Now, now," Kit said, her false smile spreading wider still. "Ernest is allowed to think that that was funny. And I'm allowed to think that this is funny." She pulled her arm back, and in one sharp movement, punched Ernest squarely in the face.

I fully agree. That part was pure awesomeness. *** Geraldine screamed. Jacques and Bertrand high-fived each other. Jerome no longer looked as ready to explode. Ernest stumbled and fell loudly against the lockers, his lower lip bleeding. The residue dripped down his chin and stained his (incredibly difficult to dry-clean) uniform. He wiped the blood away, glaring angrily up at Kit the entire time. “I’ll get you for this,” he threatened, though even as he spoke his voice was unsteady. “Kit, that was incredible!” Bertrand praised. Kit couldn’t help it, and allowed her face to take on an expression of deep satisfaction. No one expected Jerome to come forward and pin Ernest halfway between the throat and the lockers with one arm. “Let’s get one thing straight here, Ernest,” Jerome said, pointing the finger of his other hand at the triplet as he continued. “You promise to leave Esmé Salinger alone, and I promise not to kill you. How’s that for a bargain?” Ernest managed to choke out a response that sounded like “Fine.” That was enough for Jerome, and he let go of Ernest, but not before leaving one final warning. Jerome slammed one of his large fists against the top of the lockers, causing an echo to resonate throughout the hallway. *** Beatrice pulled back the covers of the bed and turned to Esmé. She was standing by the door in her pajamas, looking paler than her friends had ever seen her. Her arms were wrapped around her trembling body, and her head was lowered to the floor, her dark hair shielding her pretty face. “Why don’t you get into bed and relax, Esmé?” Beatrice suggested. “I’ll stay with you until Kit gets back, and then I’ll go get you some soup.” Esmé nodded silently, not bothering to add after the lecture she had just received from her two best friends that she didn’t want any soup. She crossed the room and climbed into bed just as there came a knock at the door. Esmé pulled the covers up over herself and lay down while Beatrice went to see who had come to call. Beatrice opened the door to discover Jerome Squalor standing there, seemingly out of breath. His chubby face was full of concern, and his green eyes seemed to dart from one area of the room to the next. “Where is she?” he asked. “Is she here?” Beatrice nodded, and turned her head toward the bed. “She’s resting now,” Beatrice said. “May I come in?” Beatrice smiled, and stepped aside. “Sure.” Jerome strode into the room and over to Esmé’s bedside. He knelt down, and reached out to take one of her delicate hands in his. “I guess you’ve heard what I’ve been doing,” she said softly. Jerome lifted Esmé’s hand to his lips and kissed it gently. Her eyes filled with tears, and she threw her arms around him. “Jerome, I’m sorry!”
