In late 1979, Headmaster Albus Dumbledore went to the Hog’s Head to interview Sibyll Trelawney for the Divination position. The interview was not going that well, until Trelawney went into a trance-like state and made a prophecy about a person being born “as the seventh month wanes” that has the “power to vanquish the Dark Lord.” This prophecy was overheard by then Death Eater Severus Snape. He only heard half of the prophecy, and relayed that information to Lord Voldemort. Because of this, Dumbledore gave Trelawney the Divination position. Trelawney is often considered a fraud by many of her students because she can’t make any real predictions. She did make one though during her time at Hogwarts, and that was when she predicted that the “Dark Lord’s most loyal servant would return to him.” And that night, Peter Pettigrew escaped and rejoined Voldemort. She was sacked in 1995 by Professor Umbridge because she was unable to make a real prediction. She was brought back the next year to share Divination duties with Firenze.

Job: Hogwarts High Inquisitor (1995-1996) Headmistress (1996)
Professor Umbridge was brought in by the Ministry of Magic to be the Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher for the 1995-1996 school year because Dumbledore could not find a suitable replacement. She is a truly despicable character, who refused to teach her students real Defense Against the Dark Arts. Instead, she made them read from a Ministry approved book. The Ministry then appointed her Hogwarts High Inquisitor which gave her the power to “inspect her fellow educators and make sure that they are coming up to scratch.” This resulted in the firings over Professor Trelawney and Professor Hagrid. Together, her and the Ministry were taking over power at Hogwarts. In early 1996, they drove Dumbledore out of Hogwarts and she became the new Headmistress. Once she was made Headmistress, the Hogwarts students and staff started to rebel against her. Her main counterparts were Peeves and the Weasley twins. She ended up being carried off by a heard of centaurs and had to be rescued by Dumbledore. She then went back to work for the Ministry where she was one of the leaders in rounding up “Mudbloods.” After the fall of Voldemort, she was thrown into jail for those actions.

After leaving school, Severus became one of Voldemort’s Death Eaters. Then he found out that Voldemort was going to kill the love of his life, Lily Potter, and her family. Because of this, Snape went to Dumbledore to become his spy. When the Dark Lord fell, Snape was appointed Potions Master at Hogwarts in late 1980. When the Dark Lord came back, Snape continued to be a spy for Dumbledore and he helped protect Harry because he was Lily’s son. Snape was given the Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher position for the 1996-1997 school year. He was forced to kill Dumbledore, on Dumbledore’s order, at the end of the school year. He was forced to flea the school with the rest of the Death Eaters to keep his true identity a secret. During the Battle of Hogwarts, he was killed by Voldemort because Voldemort believed that he was the owner of the Elder Wand. Before Snape died, he was able to pass on his memories to Harry. This is when Harry found out that Snape was truly good.
Sprout, Pomona
Course: Herbology; Head of Hufflepuff House
Born: May 15th
Professor Sprout is the current Herbology teacher and Head of Hufflepuff House at Hogwarts. Her classes are held in the Hogwarts greenhouses. She played a major role during the 1992-1993 school year where she grew Mandrakes that were used to heal the petrified students. She is firm but fair to her students and doesn’t really favor one House over the other. She detested Professor Umbridge and was also a big supporter of Dumbledore.
Trelawney, Sibyll Patricia
Course: Divination (1979-1995; 1996- )
Umbridge, Dolores Jane
Course: Defense Against the Dark Arts (1995-1996)
