Alot of our members here are still at school and sometimes we can't find the informatin we need or just don't know how to do it. Maybe we could temporarily set up a board specifically for homework help. If it works, we can keep it. If not, throw8 it away. But I think that we should give it a try.

I think it would be better to just make a homework help thread in MMisc.

You laugh but seriously, if I'm having a hard time understanding something wikipedia can be a valuable resource.

I think it's a good idea. Websites like wikipedia can't really help with subjects like translating french or art, ( I think). Not even online translators can help with French, Spanish, etc. Real people work best for things like that.

Besides, anyone can edit wikipedia. A person who knows nothing about a subject looks it up on wikipedia and would believe anything they read.

Some schools don't even allow you to use wikipedia at all. = / At my school if we use wikipedia we get an automatic F. I think it's a bit dramatic, but whatever.

That's if you use it as a source on a paper. I usually just use it if I'm having trouble getting my head around a math or physics concept and the book isn't helping,

I allow my students to use it as a source of background information (I couldn't stop them anyway), but they are not allowed to cite it, just like they're not allowed to cite a regular encyclopedia. I teach them to use the links instead, and to evaluate all internet sources.

Most, if not all, of the teachers in my school don't allow us to cite Wikipedia in school papers. But yeah, it can be a useful first reference if you don't know where else to look. I think Wikipedia can lead you to more, uh, academic places on the Net by giving you a background of the thing you want to research on.
