Hello. I am volunteer W. and, in name of all other Brazilian volunteers, I'd like to request your help.
The publisher of A Series of Unfortunate Events here in Brazil (Cia. das Letras) will not translate the appendix books to Portuguese, just the main 13 and Lemony's biography. This is becoming a big dilemma to us, because we believe that these extras are important to the story and to discover some secrets.
So, I'd please ask for someone, anyone who has any append ice books (Beatrice and Horseradish are the ones we're most interested in) to scan it, word that here means "send its content to the computer, by scanning the book page by page". So, I and a respectable team can translate the book and share our knowledge with the Brazilian community. Otherwise we'll never know what kind of things Lemony wrote to her dearest Beatrice, or the medicinal properties of horseradish, the notations the author thinks that are important or the enlightening answers to enigmatic puzzles.
If you are interested in help, please PM me asap.
Thanks.

Do you have a fansite or anything like that, so we can verify that you're not just an evil scammer trying to put the entire book on the Internet for free?
For that matter, is it not possible for you to import the books from America or a similar country? For example, I'm pretty sure the French aSoUE fan-translation of TBL was done from an imported copy of the book (from the U.K.).
You're not missing anything vital from Horseradish, though - it's just witty and wise quotes from the series with a few original Snicketisms sprinkled on top. No big secrets.
Certainly I'd love to help, but the issue of copyright becomes legally and ethically murky in this area, and I should hope not to have to resolve it in a way that strictly speaking would be piracy.

You should buy the English versions of the books online. That way 667 doesn't have to get involved in illegally copying the books.

I am the person responsible for the french unofficial fan-translation of TBL. We've learned recently that the french editor would not translate that book, so we're quite happy to have done it two years ago... ![>:(](//storage.proboards.com/253263/images/oXhfyqAhiMacTUvPnR0l.gif) To do that I indeed simply import the book. It's not that difficult. Use Amazon.com or find a bookstore which sells imported books to book a copy. I did not have a scanner at the time, so another volunteer scanned some pictures instead. The hardest part is actually the translating process... It's trickier than it seems. You'll have to make drastic choices and stick with it. I struggled hard to translate effectively the "My silence knot" anagram. I'd be most happy to give you any advice ; just send me a private message. As for the copyright issues... Well, you'd better know where you go. I don't know, Asoue isn't as well-known as Harry Potter, for an exemple, so it'd be quite overlooked. Is it illegal to make a translation whose the company which bought rights of it will never release anyway ? I'd guess it is. Try not to give the project too much publicity...

I AM indeed trying to put the book on the Internet for free, because there's no Portuguese translation, and I cannot charge for it due to copy rights. I'm not a vile villain, my intentions are the best, I swear. I know the meaning of the word xenial. We don't have any site, but a community in orkut (Google's social network). Here in Brazil there is a lot of fan-translated books! Harry Potter's and so many other best-sellers... I don't think it'll be a problem. Lemony would appreciate. And I've made some translations before, and guess I can work hard to create anagrams.

Have you checked if the copies sold in Portugal have the appendixes? They might be published by a different publisher in Portugal.

I can't find any digital version of it, and I'm unfortunately not sure if I want to buy the books online and pay abusive taxes to import them. I don't want to ask other volunteers for their money contributions either. It's indeed a dilemma.

Who here has scanners, anyway? If we get enough people to agree to it, I'm sure we could all do like 5 pages or something.

Are the importing fees that heavy? I guess it depends on the exchange rate.
Good point, PJ. If no one person scans the whole thing, that'd be best. Still, any hypothetical scans should be PMed or e-mailed to wiccaesar rather than posted publicly. While I completely endorse a fan-translation for areas that can't get the books, it would be prudent for me to remain silent on scans. ...Until the UA and TBL are out of print, anyway. Then I would consider them to be of the same status as the BBRE notes - which are in Dastardly Documents, by the way, thank you PJ.

Of course I'm not asking to publish the scanned pages to anyone, but send to my e-mail. If anyone wants to help, I'd PM this person with my personal e-mail and then start the translation process.

So I've got my hands on an unreliable transcript of the entire UA, but, well, it's unreliable.
So, any volunteers to systematically check through it and see if it's all good? I'm sure we can break it up into small, easily manageable chunks if we get enough people.
If not, well, then I guess wiccaeser will have to make do.
If you're interested, e-mail me at : "philipjucker64@hotmail.com", because I can't post it on here for obvious reasons.
