I said that was how he used to draw her, he's certainly stopped that by now as he drew her face for Liam recently.

Although I love to see Helquist's character illustrations, part of me is glad that there are so few. It makes artwork like that on The Loathsome Library, Justice Strauss in 'Or Orphans', Aunt Josephine in 'Or Disappearance' etc. so very exciting to discover for the first time. I think this lack of character art is partly coincidental and partly because it was more efficient to draw a pair of legs or a lamp or a knife when there were so many illustrations needed per book. Regarding Esme's face, I'm inclined to think that obscuring it is indeed a running joke, perhaps born of the convenience of avoiding full faces in general. We can't say for sure either way, but as Mr. Dent mentions, I have a recent drawing of Esme (Helquist kindly draws 'thank you' notes for those who buy his prints), and she is obscured once more: http://instagram.com/p/B1b3Y3kAE3H
