I agree. I don't get the impression that this is a story which is conditional upon aSoUE happening, for which the reader will absolutely 100% have to read aSoUE to understand it. But where does the line lie between "sequel" and "updated status quo"? If Lemony mentions his niece helping with his research, does it stop being a new story? Although, having asked these questions, I already know the answers. It's the degree to which you exhibit these things.

I don't think the references would be that direct, Lemony referring to his family like that, because like you said, I think the new series will be almost entirely independant. I've always imagined the parallels being more subtle, for example "a man with hooked hands handed her a worn deck of cards." You wouldn't have to read ASOUE to get the gist of the story, like you were saying, but if you have read ASOUE you'd catch the unmistakable reference to Fernald. That might also help promote sales for ASOUE; customers would buy the books to catch these indications.

How would a second movie work out? It doesn't make sense. Unless they replace the old ones or make a whole new first movie all together. What would the new series be like? Hm.

Ones where it could be that person - that bank robber mentioned in the newspaper could be Mrs. Bass - but we don't know, and never will. That said, when Handler says that some characters will return, I do think he means in a conspicuous way. I just see it as not being big, grand entrance stuff, like Kit turning up at the end of TGG was. They're just there, doing their job. Otherwise you're playing off aSoUE too much. And again, of course, I have to recall that we don't know how closely tied this new series is with aSoUE, but with a change of publisher my general opinion is that it won't be that strong a link. How would a second movie work out? It doesn't make sense. Unless they replace the old ones or make a whole new first movie all together. This is really a matter to be discussed in the Miserable Movie forum, but Brad Silberling's suggested that they could make each movie using a different medium, and the second could be claymation. But like I said, that's a matter for MMovie. They never stopped pushing for a second movie, though, you have to remember that.

New article: --- Your questions for Lemony SnicketLast week we gave you the chance to send in questions to the famous and mysterious author who goes by the name of Lemony Snicket. Shrouded in myth and mystery, the author of the “A Series of Unfortunate Events” books has shunned publicity after a scandal that saw him exiled from his hometown several decades ago. His tales of the orphaned Baudelaires – Violet, Klaus and Sunny – and their attempts to avoid imprisonment, torture and death at the hands of their evil, distant relative Count Olaf have captivated and chilled hundreds of thousands of children and adults around the world. The series has sold over 60 million copies worldwide – including five million in the UK – and have been turned into a film starring Jim Carrey, Billy Connolly, and Meryl Streep. But with the 13th and final book in the series now published, many wonder what the mysterious author has next. And thanks to your questions you can now find out. --- And then there's a video with Handler, but you have to click the link for that, I'm afraid. Edit: The only relatively interesting part of the video is that he repeats the thing about the overlap with ASOUE and the new series.

Thanks, Sherry Ann! I found the page when they were asking for questions, but by that time the deadline had passed, but the interview hadn't gone up yet. Let me incorporate that into the first post.
