I don't think he knew how scrutinised and analysed his books would become- I'm sure he never imagined a forum like this and you have to remember that these books were mostly written for children/ young adults who (thankfully) have a lesser grasp on reality than boring adults- but I do agree some of the things the characters do are positively and annoyingly stupid.

Ironically, I recall an interview where he said more or less the same thing, of how he didn't think the books would become so popular. I don't think the characters do stupid or annoying things- I just think some of the gaps in the plot leave something to be desired. I don't think the characters themselves are really a problem, unless you consider their apparent and alarmingly high tolerance for extreme physical and mental circumstances.

No not the Baudelaires- as in the supporting characters who force children to do stupid things like Nero or Jerome who never believe the Baudelaires about Olaf. I just think that some of the things that the supporting characters wont do are a bit unrealistic.

Ah. Yes, I think that's just more plot-motivating. If the adults did sensible things, the books would end pretty quickly.

Yeah, that was my point, if stupid things/ carchters weren't there then there wouldn't be a story- that's why I think you need the laps.

Another thing to accept and move on from, I suppose.

It doesn't have to be reallistic. It's a children's book series. Do people talk about how reallistic are the actions of Harry Potter characters? There's my point.

Precisley, but Sherry Ann made a good point.

If Harry Potter apparated in the second book without any explanation and the author kept writing like nothing was unusual, then people would talk. There's my point. It's like a giant leap from fiction to impossibility, but Lemony can pull that off by helping the plot along, and making it humorous as well.

So the issue is one of internal consistency, either thematic consistency or physics consistency, then. I think aSoUE has both of those, to a certain degree.

actually I reread the book recently and if I remember correctly it was mentioned that the Baudelaire's had a few hours between sunrise and class to sleep, plus sleeping during class. Also you have to consider by the last day they were probably at a mild jog. In the end the human body can go quite a ways in distress. Also in the latter books the Baudelaire's sleeping habits remain just as odd, considering staying up all night while living in V.F.D., and being chased around Hemliech hospital, really after TAA the Baudelaire's seem to have limitless energy. But remember that these kids live in a fictional world that differs in many ways, scientifically there's something very odd about their world. Children seem to have limitless potential both pyhsically and mentally in their world (Suuny is a master cook while still a toddler). Even gravity is different in their world (Aunt Josephine's house defies gravity).

Those are both helpful notes, strangely; we should really bear those in mind.

Even at a steady jog, it's really quite an accomplishment for three less-than-well-rested youngsters. But there are plenty of incidents like this throughout the seires, such as the ones you mentioned, and so I will accept this as part of the series's rationality.
