After further planning, Violet, Klaus, Sunny and Beatrice decided that they needed to find Lars, or else they couldn't escape on the Elizabethan Whistle to the mainland. He had vanished since before the Baudelaires went to the Casanovas' penthouse. As intelligent and skilled as Violet and Klaus were, they couldn't pilot a yacht. Without Lars, any plan they might put into motion might fail, and they knew this. When it was close to 4 o'clock, a knock was heard. Violet went to open the door, as she was alone in her room, with the other Baudelaires in their respective rooms - Klaus was even allowed to take Cindry to his room by the twin bodyguards - and she thought it might be one of her siblings, or Lars. When she opened the door, however, she was quite surprised. Outside, stood Bonnie and Hattie, the waitress and bartender women who were so familiar to Violet.
'Oh, sorry if we arrived unnanounced. We had two other friends distract Vinny and Tommy so they wouldn't see us.' Bonnie said. Violet noticed Bonnie didn't have her rabbit ears on, and Hattie didn't wear her tall top hat either. Violet let the two enter her room. If those two women's help had proven so crucial before, Violet wasn't about to let them stand outside her room.
'Oh, please, come in.' Violet said. The two women did, and they both sat together on the comfortable red velvet sofa of Violet's room. 'But what brings you two here, exactly, if you don't mind my asking?'
'Do we show her?' Bonnie asked Hattie, who looked at her, reflected on it for a good three seconds, and then said, 'Yes. We must be honest now.' The two women looked at Violet, and then Hattie removed something out of her coat's pocket. She gave one to Bonnie and kept the other one. As they had in hands at the same time, they revealed it's content. It was white powder, which the two women started applying on their faces with great skill. Not a minute later, their faces and necks were covered in a white powder that made them look like ghosts. They were the two white powder-faced women from Count Olaf's theater troupe!
'You!' Violet shouted, too shocked to say anything else. She now wondered how she hadn't recognized the women before. The last time she had seen these two women, it was in the darkness of Montague Manor, near Tedia, and the last time before that, they disappeared in the snowy, desolate, Mortmain Mountains. How they survived alone, in the cold, was another story entirely.
'Yes. We thought we had you at Montague Manor, but Esmé appeared and then the fire...We had no choice but to escape. After that, we rode the Luck Ferry to this island, as it was instructed to us.' said 'Bonnie.
'We know everything, Violet. We only tagged along with Olaf because he had fake proofs that the fire that killed our brother Archibald was not caused by him. We learned otherwise at the top of Mt. Fraught.' Said 'Hattie.' I'm Agatha, and she is my sister, Christie.'We are volunteers.'
Violet did not know what to make of that revelation. She remembered that while they seemed to be doing nothing wrong at Montague Manor, they surely did not help at all, and escaped at the first sign of danger. Violet was waiting to hear a plea for trust. A plea to which she would not answer.
'We somehow knew our being instructed to come here had something to do with you. It seems as though our paths will cross eventually, even if we diverge in direction.' Said Christie, who was previously Bonnie.
'We are here to secure your escape from this island. We don't ask for your trust, but if you don't trust us, then who else?' asked Agatha, who was previously Hattie.
'Funny. Have you forgotten the misery you've caused to me and my brother and sister? How you helped Olaf kidnap the Quagmires, everything doesn't just go away because you've joined the volunteers.' Violet said, the inner bitterness that rested inside her reaching the surface. There was a part of Violet, as much as there would be a part of anyone who's been dealt the worst hand in a card game or a anyone who has ever suffered in this world, who would like to get back at those who had wronged her. The difference is if whether or not you let this part of you grow and take over the other parts of you who don't want anything to do with that part, and if you do, things generally tend to not end well, and as much as Violet knew this, it was too hard for her to not lose it at times.
'We know, Violet. We know. No matter how many times we're reborn, we'll always carry this weight with us. We're not asking for forgiveness. We're asking for you to trust us because...Well, we aren't exactly safe here either. The Casanovas are beginning to become suspicious of us, and there were a few instances which I thought Esmé had recongnized one of us. We've lived in constant terror since we've been here. We only want to get out, and we'll help you get out, if you accept our help.' Said Agatha.
'Please, Violet.' Christie asked.
'I need to talk to my family about this.' was Violet's answer. She wasn't going to place her family in danger, specially with those two women who despite their best efforts simply could not be trusted, no matter what.
After Violet went to get Klaus, Sunny and Beatrice - and Cindry, who would not leave Klaus' side - the four Baudelaires talked and talked about the two women's proposal. They clearly had no other prospects of escaping, and if there were two people who could wander the Casino unnoticed, it was them, and if they could do so, they could certainly find Lars. After deliberating, it was decided. Yes, the Baudelaires would accept the two women's help, and take them on the Elizabethan Whistle to the mainland. But they had one simple task to accomplish.
'He has a scar across his face. If his face were a clock, it would be 4 o'clock. Find him, or else we'll all die here.' Violet said.
'We'll find him. But the tea party approaches. What are you going to do?' Christie asked.
'Just make sure Lars is at the courtyard by then. Leave the rest to us.' Klaus said, as he looked at Cindry, who was tense and excited at the same time, with the prospect of a dish-breaking rampage to ruin Esmé's party.
'Alright. We'll get going.' Agatha said, walking with Christie towards the door. However, Violet stopped them. 'Um...You don't honestly intend to walk around the casino with that powder on your faces, do you?' She said, while holding two red towels she had previously grabbed from the bathroom.
'Oh yes. Sorry, we're so used to the powder we forget we have it on.' Christie said.
And as the two white powder faced women, Agatha and Christie, removed their white powder, it turned 4 o'clock. And that was the time for tea.
