However, the reply from Snicket was brief - no doubt he was getting chased by villains or something - but to go to all that effort just to receive an image in return must have been quite daunting, but I am sure you would have appreciated it none the less. Yes, the fact that we know he appreciated our gift to him was gratitude enough. Additionally, we had fun writing our stories, so that made it worth our while, too. Anyway, I agree we go with Tragedy's "41 Reasons to be Concerned" idea this year. It sounds very unique and exciting, and one that isn't too time-consuming.

When you send someone a birthday gift, you get a thank you note in return. You don't expect something back that is even close to equal value. If you don't appreciate the great things he's sent to us in past few years, maybe you can just sit this one out.

The amount of concern expressed could increase with each reason, if we can think up forty-one different variations. "You should be mildly concerned" ==> "You should be considerably concerned" ==> "You should be concerned enough to retreat to your private bomb shelter."
As for figuring out how many people are going to participate, we could just wing it and add reasons until we have either forty-one or forty-one good ones. I've had an idea for one now, but I'll have to do a bit of research on it.
Edit: Also, I don't think they should have to be contemporary if they have a forty-one gimmick. For example: "Jane Austen died at age forty-one." Are you next? :o) Oh, and if anyone can get a reference to the movie in, that would be great, as we can play on the "We're very concerned" line from the trailer.
Edit Again: Apparently, 41 is the 13th smallest prime number... And the number of Mozart's last symphony. Henri Bergson, who is alluded to in TPP, died in 1941. But that's enough from Wikipedia.

Excellent; thanks, Tragedy. Okay, so I take it the majority is in favor of 41 Reasons? I certainly am, though I don't know if I'll be able to come up with any. I'm with Dante on this - let people contribute until we have enough I wouldn't worry. This is the man who wrote 'We should never, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever...' (not to mention the 'I will love you' letter).

Maybe the 41st reason - the most disturbing - should be, "You are 41 this year. Are you concerned? You should be" or something like that. Where should we add the reasons? Here, or is another thread going to be opened specifically for that? Sounds like a job for LSWannabe! ;D Anyway, I'm itching to come up with something witty and dark-ish...but I don't have anything yet. D:

Sounds like a job for LSWannabe! ;D LOL. That's a good idea! Maybe "One more year until the film sequel" or something along those lines?

Well how about if we are doing the 41 reasons to be concerned, we also include stuff relating to birthdays? Like the birthday cake you may be eating later was baked with Medusoid Mycelium. Also, Sherry Ann, are you collecting these? If so, maybe we should PM you at least one reason each and you and a collaborator can pick out the 41 favorites. Or we can vote on them.

These are some great ideas, everyone. If there are no objections, I think Dante's idea to increase the amount of concern after putting the reasons in order fits our purposes nicely. I think this is a great idea. Maybe the 41st reason - the most disturbing - should be, "You are 41 this year. Are you concerned? You should be" or something like that. Actually, that strikes me as a great beginning line to start everything off. I'm thinking another thread for the reasons themselves, and then here we can brainstorm/share facts. Well how about if we are doing the 41 reasons to be concerned, we also include stuff relating to birthdays? Like the birthday cake you may be eating later was baked with Medusoid Mycelium. I think quips like those would work just fine, so long as they're clever and match the dark-humor theme. For the most part, though, I'm rather under the impression that we're focusing more toward factual aspects. I think another thread would be our best bet for now, just so people know what kinds of things we're looking for, how many reasons are already out there, what facts have already been expressed (even though it's highly unlikely two people will come up with the same reason), etc.

Should we just ask people to contribute reasons, and then collaborate on the level of concern for each here? The reason being that we might want to have the reasons not in the order submitted, but we want the level of concern to steadily escalate.
I'm with Sherry Ann on everything else, though. Her hands are capably guiding this project.
Hmm, maybe I'll go and leaf through the books and check out the 41st page of each for more material...
Edit: Nothing, but oh well. I need to remember that this isn't a 41 gimmick, this is a concern gimmick.

I just found something that was kind of interesting. I was taking a quiz thing, and one of the questions was "who assassinated the Roman king (Caligula) in 41 AD", and one of the options was Nero. (It wasn't right... but still)

Oh wow, that's a real shame. It would've been perfect if that was true.

Yeah, the only connection is that Nero is the second emperor to follow Caligula.... and that's not much of a connection

The reason being that we might want to have the reasons not in the order submitted, but we want the level of concern to steadily escalate. Well, yes, which would resolve the issue about which I'd been concerned earlier... So the idea is to make a thread specifically for the 41 reasons, which will consist solely of clever and dark reasons Mr. Handler should be concerned about turning 41, with nothing added to the end (of the reasons, that is). Then here, after all the contributions have been gathered, we'll order the reasons from least concerning to most, then make the addition of the "you should be _______ concerned." (Some of us may have to do more than one, though, if there aren't 41 people who participate.) I just found something that was kind of interesting. I was taking a quiz thing, and one of the questions was "who assassinated the Roman king (Caligula) in 41 AD", and one of the options was Nero. (It wasn't right... but still) What a dreadfully intriguing coincidence!

I'm sure we'll be able to come up with multiple if necessary. However, hopefully there will be plenty of time and notice for a good number of people to contribute. We are open to quite a broad range of reasons to be concerned here. This is aSoUE; one way or another, everything is something to be concerned about.

What a fun idea. I'll ask my significant other, who has a B.Sc in mathematical physics if there's any grim math jokes that could be included in reference to the number 41.
