Well, he should be very concerned that fans of his books are trying to come up with "41 reasons to be concerned" on his birthday... XD

Are we still doing the birthday card on top of the 41 reasons thing?

I very much imagine that some sort of card-like accompaniment would be desirable, yes. I don't know what other people were envisioning, but I was thinking, cool banner, letter, list of reasons, big ol' block of signatures, all presented on an image page with a fancy border.

There's actually a math fun fact about the number 41 ! Take a sheet a paper with squares on it (I don't know how you call it in English) and write "41" on one square. Then write the next numbers in that manner, like a spiral :
47 48 49 50 46 41 42 45 44 43
Now once you've created that spiral of numbers, circle the prime numbers. You'll notice that the prime numbers are ALIGNED in a diagonal that takes the whole page and extends way beyond. To be fair, that diagonal ligne ends starting from 1681 (which is 41x41), but it's still pretty cool to see some kind of order in the umpredictability of prime numbers. It also only works with 41 in the center, for some reason.
No idea how tu use that for DH's birthday though... Though that could give an idea for the design of the birthday card.

That is a very cool 41 factoid, but I don't know if it's concerning, exactly, which is a shame.
But that brings me to my next point; are we pretty much ready now to start taking submissions for the 41 reasons, and reserve this thread for organisation and, in the meantime, for planning the details of the card? When I've got time I'll throw together an objectively terrible MS Paint representation of what I have in mind.

Made submission thread. I hope I covered everything; I hadn't realized how much information we'd discussed. I also asked for signatures there, so organization will be a little easier here. Awesome 41 factoid, thedoctororwell. Rather like the staircase to 667 Dark Avenue with misfortune at every diagonal. So I think 41 Reasons is pretty much finished for the time being. The next thing we move on to is the card, in which case we'll need to decide about its contents and format. I very much imagine that some sort of card-like accompaniment would be desirable, yes. I don't know what other people were envisioning, but I was thinking, cool banner, letter, list of reasons, big ol' block of signatures, all presented on an image page with a fancy border. I'd pictured rather the same, only without the reasons in an image: what did you have in mind for that? Oh, the Paint, right. Okay, I look forward to seeing what you're envisioning.

Nothing could be clearer. ...There are two possible ways to read that statement. Also, it might be better to put out the signature collection later; I can type out reasons of forty-one concern any time, but scanning my signature will have to wait (although not for too long).

I think I'll draw my signature on MS Paint, to make it easier.

MS Paint is valid, I agree. We don't all have scanners or decent digital photography devices.

My thought was that everyone can type their reasons now and edit their signatures in later (MS Paint or otherwise). Anyway, my reasons apparently need to be reconsidered as they're terribly dark compared to everyone else's. Part of this comes down to how we're going to send this to Handler: A thread in the Dastardly Documents? A very large image? I think the only way to get a border in would be for everything to be in an image format, but the only way to fit everything in a way that is appealing to the eyes would mean it'd have to be considerably larger than the example you've provided here (well, I'm sure you didn't create that to scale, but it'd still have to be a pretty large image). Other than that, though, I think it's a great layout.

What I was envisioning was an image about half, a third (whatever looks normal) the size of one's screen and very, very tall. Or, alternatively, a series of page-sized images - it depends on how much space the finished product takes up. But I do think throwing everything on an image file or three would be convenient because it concentrates every element on a single file rather than scattering it onto multiple formats.
Also, I'm interested in what your reasons to be concerned might be, Sherry Ann, if you say they're quite so dark. Perhaps you could PM me if you don't want to post them publicly.

An image file is definitely more convenient. I just wasn't sure how much room you were thinking it'd take up. Oh, and how exactly we'd get it into an image? Screenshots?

I was thinking you could just arrange the text using something like MS Paint and then ask the artists to embellish it.
Edit: Just so we know where we stand, it's my reckoning that if we use all the examples presently posted, we're already more than halfway there.

It's just occured to me that there should probably be a deadline for submitting reasons. Does February 25th sound good to everyone?
